DAILY STATE CHRONICLE, JUNE 25, 1891.

Hardy, Geo. 1 Pell, C. J. Betts. r -. - - """" w . he pleasures incident to this gath ering; it meets in Winston. Are these assurances not a sum cient guarantee of both a pleasant and profitable gathering? Winston is bestirring herself to make enjoyable the visit of the As sociation. The meeting could not have been called at a better place. It is the town above all others of which the editors have read and written, and now in the very white heat of its aggressive development, in the day when our fondest hopes of a great North Carolina commer cial and industrial city is being realized, let the editors of the State who have fought for this progress through thickets of dis couragement, gather together and in the'midst of it all, mid the whiz of the electric car and hum of spin dles, mid theories of tobacco auc tioneers and the clink of the trowel, shake the hands of an industrious people, feast on their prophetic achievements and smoke the pipe of pleasure "and profit around the editorial camp-fire. Why can't the fraternity of the State lay down its weapons for a while, dry oft' the pen, allow the H scissors'a rest and the paste time to harden, and gather in Winston as a united body to get nearer to each other? Then; is no need for the Ciiicov JCLi: to impress upon every editor the importance of being present at this convention; progress in North Carolina journalism demands it. . There is no need for us to tell of people of every county of the State have more or less interest. It is not a mere ostentatious display or contest of ambitious rivalry. It is an honorable, useful, and impera tive competition for public notice. The State gains immensely in pop ulation, in industries and in'capital, if, from the intelligent epitome pre sented by ihe several counties in a general exposition settlers and in vestors can be led directly up to the object of their quest. The loss, on the other hand, is in the same pro portion, if .s;ich presentation be not GOV. HOLT AND EDUCATIONAL INTERESTS. and Warts it is'creat. DRIED FRUITS AT ). R. In another direction the States of Central America, with their valuable and eontinually in creasing tropical productions are reached by a shorter route than from any other port in the United 1 JL States. Mexico and the Northern coast of South America are closer to Tampa also than to any other of our ports. Thus there is not only a probability, but a certainty of concentrating at no distant day in the harbor of Tampa, that fabulous stream of commercial wealth which has fascinated human i terest or cupidity since the tropics became the synononym of all that was rich, wonderful, and desirable. Thence from Tampa to be distribu ted, and to beck its first terminal stays at Asheville, in the mountains, like Tampa brought to knowledge and fame by the agency of . steam. It is probable, however, that it is not a commercial bond that is sought. The tie of sympathy be tween two places is the tie of an identical interest. Both are health resorts, Tampa for the Winter Asheville for all the year around. It is desirable that they be brought close together. It is pleasant to know that a far interior North Caralina town shoult oe emoraceu in suen conspicuojs association. MUTUAL INSURANCE GO. CF NEW YORK. BICHAliD A. McCUBDY. Pkesidxft. L G. RHODES A. G.
