'now nearly twenty y"ar: past, when the Republicans ruled and corruption and venality and fraud hehi high carnival in North Carolina? It is somvtimes wise not to forget. The recollection of Littlefield and his band of robbers, of Kirk and his regi- ment of cut-throats, of a prostrated people and an "exhausted judiciary," should nerve the resolution of every Democrat who has a hatred of wrong and a patriotic heart. . We do not believe that the members of the Alliance can be summarily driven into the Third party, the pri mary result of which will be the de?- truction of the Democratic, party. They are Democrats first, and then Alliance - men, remembering thai the Alliance as organized and developed wh free 0 1 from partizan purposes Tiiosb who remember the days of Republican domination, and yet give countenance to the movement that tends to disorganize and disrupt the Democratic party, are guilty of a great wrong; those, who are too young to remember, will learn for themselves by sad experience the nature of those days, if their endeavors to destroy the party that gave peace to the State t 11 i r t mi i shall succeed, for history will repeat ; itself ' 1 . . , Thk following patriotic sentiment e .i ir-t . if from the Wilmington Messenger is ear- nestly commended: 1 In politics where there are division anu antagonism tnat threaten a serious disintegration which will nrnvn fut Ji it is the part of statesmanship a,d wis! ; dom to calmly survey the whole field in a spirit of enlightened candor and conservatism, to carefully consider all the matters at issue, and with upright, ness of purpose and with an eye look ing to the welfare of the whole Statt, to agree upon such a comproTiisj as will prevent the threatened division and disintegration. Now this means candor and fair dealing and a willing ness on the part of each to give and take, and to agree upon a platform of principles tlmt all can accent. Ir the Democratic States of the North and East have indicated, by the c Al . ' J c votes ot their Representatives in Con- gress on the silver bill, how they would have voted, at the next Presidential ' election on the subject, it is quite evi- l ,u hi. , dent that every one would have been lost to the Democratic Presi . j . , ; sidential : nominee, had a silver plank been put in i the Democratic platform. An analysis of , ' the vote shows that our Democratic friends were wise in not precipitating such an issue on the eve of a lresiden- tial election, for, apparently, it ii u i .v i would have involved the party ! in hopeless, defeat for many ' years. The Republicans are rather disappointed at the result, and are dis posed to taunt the Democracy with Cowardice, but tt IS all from their Stand- ! point. Make tariff reform the leading issue, and the Democratic nominee for j President will be elected, if Democrats , . ' ; remain true to their principles. AVOID THE CONTINGENCY. If the deliberations of the next Democratic State conrention are to be harmonious, it must be decided at the Democratic primaries. Those who in tend to support the nominees of the convention will be qualified to attend as delegates, but if those who may fa vor the formation of a Third party are sent it is probable that there will be discord. Such a contingency should be avoided by every honorable means, and the most effective will be to send no one as a delegate who does not intend to yield his own preferences co the decision of the Democratic party ! olliciaUy made known through its con vention regularly called and organ ized. There is nothing prescriptive in this policy, for it is only a sagacious safeguard, against the success of political deception, such a3 aDy prulent man would guard against in the ordinary business affairs 0f life.
