Of course fodder is sold by the pound, or rathtr by the hundred pounds, and when he had found a purc-hns r l e was told he must take his lnad to the town scales, have it weighed, deliver the foddtr to the purchaser, return to the scales, have the wagon weighed substrai-t the weight of the wagon from the gros weight, g"t a ticket from it to the pur chaser and get his pay for the fodder. The old town soales, as they stood on the northeast corner, of the market square, were constructed alter the primitive htyie. were somewhat of an uncertain ord'sr of architecture, and sometimes announced results which would lead th interested to suppose that they had be-n employed as an at tomey for the deft nee., and that th-y were doing tiue duty to their clients. The weighmaster was a man of un- dI mished chrracter, a tailor by trad on e t s d he sometimes forgot to notice whether ihe mule which drew the wagon was weighed with the wagon or not and uence there were occasionally very serious and unaccountable discrepances between the loaded wajion and the empty wagon. Dave bought a load of fodder, had it weighed, delivered it to the pur chaser, returned.had the ampty wagon weighed and to his utter dismay and consternation be was informed that the empty wagon weighed several hundred pounds more than it did be tore the fodder was unloaded. Dave was a clear-headed man, and he knew something was wrong, and he did not hesitate to express his views on the subject. He took otl hi wool. hat. wined the t-ersniration from his not too massive bro and bodly proclaimed: "I'll be dad-shipped if have some fodder." This caused an investigation, and a hen it was found that the mule was n.it u-Mcrht-d with Aie fodder, bus was weighed with the t mpty wagon it .hrtw a volume of light on the matter and proved that Dave did "have some tedder." This drawing off, as will certainly take place, of the best hands will leave tie others to do interior work. And poor ly made goods will secure a poor price, and thereby damage the reputation of those industries which we would a 1 see gaining stability in our midst But this is not all. A system of low wages means great suffering in special emergencies in the part of the people There is much poverty in Kal eigh. It may not be. pleasant to say it, or to think about it. But, in order to help along in some matters we must know and look at tacts as they are We have no city physician, neither ought the working peo pie to be piupers or objects of chari'y. Thy snould earn enough to pay doctor's bills, clothe their family sufficiently, live comfortably and put away a little for a rainy day. Can h y do this on 75 cents or $1 per day? It is utterly impo sible. Ihey can hardly exist, to say nothing of the comforts of life, or b' ing prepared for special emergencies which come to us all. My heart ach js for the poor when they are sick, such as I see nearly every day. They have nothing to fall back upon. Heaven knows they have not been ex'ravagant. They have had no hing to ha extravagant with. Rent, fuel, food and clothes take money Precious tittle some of the?e poor souls have ever had They were not lazy. They s'roply did rot have money enough lor iheie work.
