V.. tc. Meat Extracts in Sickness. We have witnessed many changes of opitiion respecting some of the commonest articles of diet for the sick. The old view that calres' feet j ally was of exceeding nutritive value, was at one time so contro verted that the jelly ceased to be much used. It is now sanctioned as Having a place in dietetics, and I believe it may be safely re garded as a temporary form of nourishment of no inconsiderable value. Beef-tea has been in and out of repute, but we have, or should have, no doubt now as to its stimu lant and reparative properties. We cannot think lightly of it as com monly prepared, for it can certainly prove harmful, when not desirable, as in the case of rheumatic fever. I believe it is right to withhold it in such cases Again, it is so far apt to act as an aperient that it ia best not to em ploy it in enteric fever, or in diar rhea, when the bowels are in an ir ritable condition. Mutton, veal, or chicken essences can, however, be used, having no such sperient ac tion. We have to distinguish be tween a dietary suitable for acute disease, when we hava to wait and tide over difficulties, and one that may be better adapted to restore a convalescent or weakly patient The highest nutritive value may not be (I think it is not) the most essential point to have regard to in selecting a dietary in acute diseases. From Dietary for the Sick, by Sir Dyce Duckworth, in The Popular Science Monthlyfor May. VIKT' OITTFITTRW 0 1851. 1S3 Castona is es&muel Pitcher's prescription for Infants and Children. The old education takes the standpoint of the adult; the new, that of the child. In ex ceptional cases these objects are ac complished; but the average child is left in a condition of permanent mental dyspepsia and torpor. The new education conceives the child as looking forward into the phen omena ofnature and life, curious and eager to kno-v realities first, then to express his knowledge, and delighted with the exer cise of his powers. To bring the child into contact with facts, to guide him in classifying and label ing these facts for himself, becomes the teacher's first and chief duty, in obedience to the sound principle that development of powers is gained by their exercise only. From this point of view education is conceived of as a natural process extending from the cradle to the grave, with Nature as the chief teacher, and the mother as the first assistant, whose work 's carried on by the schools and the experiences of life. In this natural process of education, ideas come before ex pressions, whether the idea be the child's first conception of color and form or the profoundest abstraction of a philosopher; and its principles are therefore applicable to educa tion in all grades from the kinder garten to the university. It is expected that a decision will be reached in a day or so. The New York World, in men tioning the case, says : "Wright testified that he sold his one-fifth interest in the firm in 1885 for $40, 000, though the firm was taken into the cigarette trust in 1889, at a val uation of $7,500,000.
