The "Register of Deeds Case" occupied
considerable time. This was an action
by John II. Hannonto oust J. M. Griz
zard. Hannon was elected by the peo
ple, but, in the judgment of the County
Commissioners he was nor a citizen 01
the State at the time of his election, and
they declared the office vacant and elected
Capt. J "M. Gri.zard. The jury, af er
being ''hung' for several days, rendered
their verdict in favor of Hannon, and
judgment was given accoringly, from
which Capt. Grizzard appealed.
The law in reference to Juries in
capitol cases is very defective, -in cur
judgment. We think rigid qualifications
should be prescribed, and for the Sheriff
to summon anyone not possessing the
qualifications should be made a misde
meanor. If this was done, then only a
::uall number of jurors would be required
All of t he jurors summoned ought to be
paid, whether they serve or not. It is a
bad rule that works one way only. Now,
if a juror fails to attend he can be fined,
if he attends and is not taken he gets no
pay.
Hereafter the term of our court will be
three weeks instead of two as now. This
will give satisfaction to litigants. The
crowded state of the docket in this coun
ty almost amounted to a denial of justice.
