HV: 'fi. S : i V THE ' DEMOCRAT. Enterfd at the l. O. at Scotland Neck as secokd class Mato MaTTEB. Tlmrlnv. February 19, W. W. K1TCHIN, - - - -Editor. With last issue of the Democrat I severed my connection as editor. J wish for the paper unbounded success "anil may it number its volumes by tens and be a criterion by which those outside of the town aud county may judge the town and county. We have formed a very fine opinion of the place and citizens and will ever hold m high Jregard those man' friends which we have formed in our short residence. We wish Mr. Kitchiii, the new editor, success. Very Resp't., Chas. E. Haskitt. Democrat Stock Company. We, the undersigned, having unit ed as joint stock holders, have pur chased The Democrat, and we now place the paper on a solid basis, wfth a capital stock sufficient to insure its permanency. We do this through patriotic principles, being interested in the town and community and in the great cruse of denioeraej' as well. And we take this means of assuring the public that this paper shall con tinue whether it is self-sustaining or not. But it is well known to the pub lic that no paper can be successful without the hea-ty cooperation and steady support of 'the people. Every community ought to be aud is able to sustain a first-class newspaper; and the community that fails to do this is rightly considered behind the times aud wanting in enterprise. If the pa per should fail to be self-sustaining, it will incur loss both to the stock holders and editor. Wr, therefore, appeal to our friends and the public generally to give their support.and thus aid us in the contin uance of this enterprise so needful to the community. ( We assure the uublic that they need not hesitate to patronize the pa per either in subscriptions or adver tising, for it shall not be allowed to suspend to the disadvantage of sub- scribers and advertisers. The politics of the paper is outlin ed in another column, concerning which we all agree. We again ask the public to aid us in establishing in our midst a first-class paper, and we confidently believe that they will do SO. Noah Biggs. N. B. Josey & Co. E, E. Hilliard. W. H. Kitciiix. W.A.Dunn. To 1 'h Public. In av-uii.siw : iw:il au::es?iift iii-iiiHy i'aU to ; he. i.l s. an .ineiutnt:!i.vd ine wo tt n. thai, wo h:ivc coiisidfri-d well the bin drauces that obstruct the pathway U success. Now, thinking that our ever are somewhat open, and knowing that we have substantial grounds on which to base a bright hope, we salute the public and cordially invite all tlu "friends of the Democrat to lend a helping hand and joyous encourage ment to it by continuing thoir sub scriptions and consider it a fair me medium for advertising.Ot course, the Jt.be general make up of the Democrat hereafter will, in no wise, be related to, or connected with its management and control i.a the past. -As"1he readers of this issue wil: readily perceive, in the card of tht stock-holders, a safe guarantee foi . t.ie continuance and spread of tlu circulation of the Democrat, let those who have been hesitating in tlu least, hesitate no longer but feel fret to patronize this enterprise in Scot land Neck. It is impossible for aii3 paper, however energetic may be itt director or however potent be "tht power behind the throne,' to succeed without, at least, moderate patronage fram the citizens of its native com munity. The NttcsQbserver, last week, echoed an acknowledged fact in saying that "the size of the town has much to do with the circulation of its representative paper." The Democrat does not expect to equal the New York Herald until Scotland , Neck many times doubles its preseni population, but for all thaUts futun is bright. The Amazon is as small and unnoticed at its source as is tin most insignificant stream of the earth. "What's in a name?" The political channel of the Democrat is fully em bodied in its appellation, as we un derstand it. As our predecessor, tht Commonicealtlt, which was only ouj forerunner, was strictly Jeffersonian in its politics, so we shall ever re sound the sentimeuts and attempt al ways to follow ip the wake, long sint illustrious, of the Sage of Monlicel lo. We shall ever eucouf age and promote, as far a An 'us lies, the principles of tt.ose.who most clearly sanction, the doctrines of j'efTerson and Jackson. The Constitution, strictly construed, we shall accept as our guide, We shall fearlessly oppose all maasures. both state aud national, which we be lieve to be contrary to the organic law of our couutry. Our paper shall be democratic its highest and no blest sense, and not partisan as that terra is generally understood. It shall be the purpose of the Dem ocrat to encourage anything that teuds to the advancement of educa tion, of the arts, of farming interests, of commerce and in fact to promote the community and to reflect the ad vantages of our locality. We hope to !-o nha rn (in ornnA to OUT SCCtion Of the State and throw credit upon our enterprising town, and on the other hand we hope to receive good from our considerate friends, who recog nize the fact that with the advance ment ot this paper, the best interests of the community, county and State shall also be advanced, and vice versa. We wish to be considered alive to progress, aud we know that we mast be to seem to be. To give to the pub lic news from all parts of the State, to shake hands with its progressive contemporaries and joiu them in their glorious efforts to elevate the Old North State, to welcome progress, to brighten the homes of the troubled, to give choice reading matter to its subscribers, to irownat anything that partakes of the character of fraud or violence, and to contemn and con demn anything that we suppose to be groveling : these shall constitute the Democrat's joy. and we shall regard ourselves as happy in so acting. We shall sift well and impartially judge the contents of our exchanges, and when we differ, our opinion will be voiced in unmistakable larguage. The Democrat shall be a bold and resolute denouncer of wrong whether that wrong emanates from the ranks of its foes or of its frumds. When we see fit both "prince and pauper" shall be attacked. On all questions of sectional interest we wisli to utter the wish of the voters. The Demo ckat shall continue to be wholesoul d, liberal-hearted and democratic. In conclusion, we most earnestly ap peal to every public-spirited man and woman in Halifax county and the! State to give us their patronage aud encouragement in our effort to estab lish a first-class democratic and news paper in the town of Scotland Neck. ' Very truly, W. W. KlTCHTK. Justices of the Feaee. The present Legislature will elec. naiiy Justices of the Peace in each ..ounty. It is very important that ex- seme care be exercised aud that tue villofthe people be scrupulously re ;.ir le i. We advise t!u chair naa o )-M;ooratie etc committees to call a !2:-.'tir)r in each township of thei .counties to select the successors u. hosu whose term will expire, The1) should then be sent to Raleigh at once. Let the people exercise due care and recommend none but good men. Washington Gazette. Paying Debts. A christian and an honest man needs no law to make him pay his debts. That spirit of honesty and justice, that every honest man feels, makes him pay bis debts, law or so law. The man who would hide be hind legal subtifuges. that were creat ed for the protection of honest uieiv who desire and need protection from the heartless creditor, who would force from him his only hope of main taining ' a dependent and helpless family, in not a true man, is not a christian. Kinston Free Press. We hope the House of Representa tives will not reach the Blair Bill this session. We want to see it continue at wise legislation, but never do we wish to see it have the time to so completely ignore the Constitution as to pass that Bill which so clearly signifies a disregard for the constitu tion. It appears from the proceedings of the Legislature that Edgecombe is to have a no fence law, and, perhaps. Halifax too. We would like to cau tion the representatives of Halifax to thoroughly understand the feelings of the citizens, before acting too hastily. The House of Dakota has passed by a large majority a Woman Suffrage Bill, which was, we should judge, an inwise act, and as such would be considered in North Carolina, bat perhaps the women there are slightly different from those of Carolina. Clippings- .Wilson Mirror : Fire thousand pounds of tobacco were sold in Bat bleboro last week at an average of 16 cents.- Some sold as high as $1,80 : i Tarboro Southerner : As the Eng lish trudge through the desert they frequently propound the favorite question of Capt. Warrenton Gazette: Oar people seem to be more active, more energet ic, more industrious, more determin ed and more hopeful than we ever knew them. It is a cheering sign. Henderson Gold Leaf : Henderson, as a tobacco market, grow3 better with age. She ranks along with the best in the State, if fine tobacco from all parts of the country, heavy breaks and high prices, are a proper criteri on to judge from. Monroe Express: Wheat and oats .re looking very poorly. The out look at this season has not been as unsatisfactory for years. There is yet plenty of time for them to recov er and make good crops. Western Tribune : A Railroad is projected to run from Alt. HflUy on the Carolina Central Railroad to Denver in Lincoln county. The Alan- agement of the C. C. R. Norfolk E ceaing News : The spirit of reform is abroad in the land. The North Carolina House of Represen tatives has passed a bill making it a misdemeanor to sell or give cigarettes to a boy under ten years qf age, and Virginia boys are hauled up in the primary schools for chewing tobacco. Wilmington Star : The greatest change of temperature recorded this seauon took place during Tuesday indTnesday night, the Star ther mometer showing a fall of forty de crees in twentyfour hours ending at 6 o'clock yesterday morning.
