FT Bryant had the misfortune to cut his foot with an ax a few days ago while splitting some timber. Church feast. The ladies of St. Mark's Episcopal church in Halifax wilt give a feast on Tuesday, Wednes day and Thursday of the first week of court for the benefit of said church. Second crop of pears. Mr. T. B. Haskitt exhibited a gourd on the streets Satur day which was something of a curiosi ty. The gourd proper would hold about a quart, and the gourd and neck, which was about as large as a walking cane, measured 3 feet and 8 inches. Superior Court. Superior court will be held in Halifax next week. The Democrat will be glad to see any who may be a little over due on our list or any who may wish to subscribe or any who need job printing of any kind. Opossums enough. Mr. John T. Davi3 had a fine box of 'possums in town the other day. He had eight in one box and said he would have brought more if his box had been larger. His ability to supply a large number was only limited by the size of the box. November 11th. Cards are out announcing the marriage of Miss Mary Octavia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Laughinghouse, to Mr. J. Bryan Grimes at Chocowinity, N. C, Wednesday, November 14th. The bride and groom are both accomplished and popular and the occasion will be one of very great interest to their many friends. Run over a little. It being a campaign season we have allowed a few of our subscribers' names to re main on our list after the time of their subscriptions had expired. We hope they will now send us the small amounts due and renew their sub scription. Next week we shall notify those who are behind. Please be prompt in your settlements and renew als. Burglars at work. Last Sunday night while Mr. R. H. Shaw and fam ily were at church some one entered his house and opened a trunk or two. Two purses were taken which contain ed $15. Mr. Shaw took out a search warrent Monday morning. He said he could identify the purses. He suspects m . 1 1 some parties, but thus lar notning nas come of the warrant 85 barrels ox 4 acres. Mr. N. Biggs gathered 85 barrels of corn from 4 acres of land. He said that had not some hogs been on a part of the corn besides some casualties by the winds he believed he would have gath ered 100 barrels. One of the columns of our report of the speaking here got mixed np last week. It oc curred by getting a stick of type in the wrong column while maicing up the forms. Died. Mr. John S. Savage, eon of Mr. G. A. Savage, died in Richmond, Ya., Sunday Nov. 4, at 4 o'clock, a. m., aged 26 years. He was taken suddenly ill Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock and never spoke again. His remains were brought to Enfield Monday and inter red in the old family burying-ground near there. Deceased married about 7 months ago Miss Cautts of Richmond who survives him. She came to Scot land Neck Tuesday to visit her deceased husband's parents. The Democrat extends sympathies to the bereaved family. At Braswell's Monday, Nov. 5. '91, Mrs. John Manning, aged G5 years. Fire in Kinston. News comes from Kinston that the entire plant of the Kinston Lumber Company was consumed Monday, be sides several private dwellings. The insurance on the lumber plant partial ly covered the loss, ana there was also some insurance on the dwellings that were burned. Hyman Jenkins. - At the home of the bride's father, Mr. Whit Hyman, near Hamilton, N. C, on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 3 o'clock, p. m., Miss Maud Hyman was married to Mr. K, Jenkins, of Scotland Neck, Rev. W. J. Smith, officiating. A large number of friends of the bride and groom assembled to witness the mar riage. Immediately after the ceremony the bridal party, consisting of the bride and groom and Mess. E. R. Ausborne and J. E. Lewis, who accompanied the groom returned to Scotland Neck. Quite a number of friensd had been invited to the wedding supper which had been prepared at the home of the groom by Mrs. Joyner, Mrs. Bowers and Miss Jennie Joyner. The supper was most bountiful and delicate ly prepared and the gay company of guests remained together several hours in pleasant conversation and then sep arated. The Democrat extends congratula tions to the groom and wishes the hap py couple a long and prosperous life to gether. Tillery Arrington. At the home of the bride near Ring wood, Oct., 31, at 3 p.m., Miss Mary C. Arrington was married to Mr. Paul V. Tillerv, of Tillerv, Rev. R. E. Peele, ol Wilmington, officiating. The attendants were : Miss Cora Arrington of Rocky Mt., with Mr. Wells Tillery, of Tillery ; Miss Kate Tillery of Scotland Neck with Mr. John Arrington, of Rocky Mt. ; Miss Emma Arlington of Racky Mt. with Mr. Lyman Draughan of Whltakers ; Miss Mary Cotton of Dawsons with Mr. Paul llasberry of Whi takers ; Miss Pierce of Rocky Mt. with Mr. Lynn Branch of Dawsons ; Miss Mary Parker of Rocky Mt. with Mr. Edwards of Rocky Mt. The bridal party left immediately after the ceremony for the home of the groom near Tillery where about sixty friends of the contracting parties had gathered to enjoy the reception tender ed. After many congratulations ana pleasant wishes the spacious dining halls were thrown open and the jovial guests were conducted in where they partook of a most abundant and deli cately prepared old time wedding sup per, which consisted of every good thing needed to make it bountiful and satisfying 10 all. The bride is beautiful and accom plished and popular and the groom is a young man ot all the sterling quali ties for noble manhood. Sexton from near Enfield was here Friday night. Rev. R. T. Vann attended the West Chowan Baptist Association last week. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Higgs of Green ville, pent two days here lat week on a visit to Mrs. Shields' family. Miss Annie Pittman left this week for Salem. Her friends are sorry to lose her from Scotland Neck. Mrs. J. Frank Brinkley and family returned to Halifax Wednesday after several days stay in Scotland Neck. Mrs. N. B. Josey has gone to Wake Forest to attend the golden wedding of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Brew er. Mr. Earle Waiston has returned from Johns Hopkins hospital, Baltimore, where he went for treatment of his ankle. He s hopeful that it will now le perfectly well when he recovers from the operation. Mrs. W. S. Ballard left to-day for Anson county where she goes to visit her relatives. Mr. Ballard who has lived here for three years and occupied a mission field for the Tar River Bap tist Association, will co elsewhere. The entire community have become great ly attached to Mr. and Mrs. Ballard and regret their leaving. They have made a host of friends here of all classes and they will long be pleasantly remembered in Scotland Neck and community. The best wishes of the people accompany them wherever they go- Death of Theodore L. Crump. The sympathy of the community goes out to Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Crump in the sudden death of their second son, Theodore Lyman, on Wednesday, Oct. 31st at 2 o'clock, a. m. On the Satur day previous he was in town in his usual health. On Monday he was taken with a chill which rapidly devel oped into hemorrhagic fever with the sad result as above stated. He was a boy of a bright mind and studious hab its, with a strict regard for the truth. With such traits of character he bid fair to grow up into a good and useful man, but just as he was entering his thirteenth year he was suddenly called away to the other world. Let us be lieve and hope that "It is well with the child." W. J. S. Marriage at Union. (Correspondence to The Democrat.) Ahoskie, N. C, Nov. 3, 1894. Miss Emma Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Bakr, of this place, was married to Mr. J. H. Downs in the M. E. church in Union last Wednes day evening, October 31st. J Capt. N. Y. Robertson, who has charge of the trestle force is now mak ing his headquarters here. Mr. Emmet Robertson, special relief agent for the Seaboard Air Line, from Norfolk to Raleigh, is spending a few days here. Mr. B. Brice, who has been sick for some time, is improving. The saw mill and gin house of Mr. J. R. Garrett, was destroyed by fire re cently. The new store which is to be occu pied by Messrs. Parker & Hill Is now in course of erection. Many friends were present and the presents were numerous iiiseful and pretty. A reception was given at the home of the groom tiiat evening at which a large circle of young people greatly enjoyed the occasion. The low price of cotton is distressing to farmers and merchants.
