THE CORVALLIS GAZETTE. FRIDAY. JUNE 22, 1900. AMERICA IN CHINA. The attitude of the United States in the Chinese crisis is at tracting the attention of the world. One of the London papers, for example, says the Globe-Democrat, has an article entitled "President McKinley's Opportunity," in which it says that this country can act with more moral effect in China than can any of the great nations of Europe. It remarks that Eng land's movements are regarded with so much suspicion by Rus sia that serious complications might arise if a force of British troops should be landed near Pekin. The same is true of Russia, it says, "but the United States has traditions of friend ship with Russia, and a commu nity of interests with England. Its action, therefore, would not encounter the hostility of either Dower." This is a chance, it remarks, for the United States to preserve the open door which Secretary Hay has obtained, and adds: "America's opportunity has come. Will she be equal to it or will she let it slip from her hands and lose her vast poten tialities of trade in Northern China." All this is true of course. America can take the initiative in China with more eflect than any other nation. It is known to the world that this country asks no territory in Asia. It wants no sphere.Jof influence in China, or any other part of that continent. America's action in China would arouse no jealousy among any of the nations which wn or seek territory in that quarter. Moreover, the United States is oniterms of friendship with all other countries. The 'traditions of friendship with Russia" which the British jour nal mentions are as powerful to day as thev ever were. The country has traditions of friend ship with Germany, France Italy and all the rest of the coun tries interested in Chinese affairs also, for the cordiality which has existed between the United States and England for the past two or three years has pretty well extirpated all remembrance of the earlier hostility between the two countries. So far as re crards the attitude of the rest of the great nations towards the United States, there is an era of good feeling for this conntry al over the world. Yet the action of the United States in China will be entirely independent of that of all the other nations to the extent that there will be no formal compact between this and any other coun try. The purpose of the admin istration at Washington on this point has been made tolerably plain in the past eight or ten days. At the end of The Hague conference of 1899 the American delegates, in signing the agree ment, made the declaration that "nothing contained in this con vention shall be so construed as to require the United States of America to depart from its tra ditional policy ot not entering upon, interfering with or en tangling itself in the political questions or internal administra tion of any foreign state. " This disclaimer on the part of the United States will apply to China as well as to Europe, for United States intervention, in the shape which it may take, will be for the purpose of giving the protec tion to its citizens which the Chinese government virtually confesses its inability to afford The United States will enter into no entangling alliances with anv European nation or nations on the Chinese or any other question. It declined England's invitation for a ioint action in 1823 against the holy alliance, and, ih the Monroe warning to that coalition which was issued in that year, established a policy of independent action which will be followed in the Chinese crisis The republican national con vention closed its three days' session at Philadelphia yesterday McKinley was undoubtedly nom inated by acclamation, and Roosefelt by the same process for vice-president. Iyeft to the direct vote of the country these two grand men would be almost the unanimous choice of the re publican party for these high of fices. Notwithstanding the bickering and harping against the president by prominent men even in his own party, they all realize that no man in any party today could have performed the task which he has performed so wisely and well. The charge that McKinley is weak is given the lie by the character of the attacks upon him. Weakness excites pity or contempt, and there has been none of either .sentiment displayed in the as saults upon the president. School Picnics. The school and Artisan picnic at ! Calloway's grove last Saturday was a grand success. A large and en thusiastic crowd was present to en courage the pupils in their efforts. Excellent music was furnished by the Du3ty band. Mr. Edward Wiles made a splendid address of welcome, which was followed by an address by Supt. Denman. The literary program was given in the afternoon which consisted of reci tations, drills, concart recitations, andJJ songs. The orange eating arid nail driving contests created con siderable sport for all. The rain which had been threatening for several days held off so that excel lent weather was had. There will be a grand union pic nic at Wilhelm's grove, which is just, across the bridge from Monroe on Junezrf. Mr. ri. lieiKnap will make the address of the day. The Bellfountain band will be on hand to fill the air with music. An excallent literary program has been prepared by the schools included in the picnic. The last school picnic of the sea son will be held in Blodgett on Saturday, June 30, which will in clude all of the schools in the .west ern part of the county. "tn the contest of attendance be tween the schools of the county for the mont ending June 10, districts No. 27 and 85 tied with an attend ance of 100 per cent. The banner will therefore be held two weeks by each school. The next five schools having the highest attendance were: No 77, 99 per cent.; No 12, 98.5; No 5, 98.5; No 24, 93 and No. 7, 93. George Cronkite Hurt. The following item from Tues day's Telegram will arouse sym pathy in the hearts of all Corval lisites: "George H. Cronkite, a carpenter employed by Messrs. Morgenson & Chandler, on the erection ot John L. Duthie'i residence at East Seven teenth and Belmont streets, fell from a scaffold to the ground Fri day afternoon at 3 o'clock, and sus tained a painful gash on the left side of his head, and his back and shoulders were badly rent and bruised. "ihe injured man wa removed to his home, where proper medical assistance was procured, and the latest reports were that the unfor tunate mechanic was resting easier The scaffolding upon which he was working fell to the erouud, a dis tance of 25 feet, carrying Mr. Cron kite with it. He fell headlong striking on a pile of lumber, and to his remarkable presence of mind in holding his arms above his head may be attributed his marvelous escape from more serious results Mr. Cronkite is an ex-member of Company F, Second Volunteers, nd is favorably known about the city. His injuries will necessitate him being on the sick report for several weeks." George attended the O A C for a number of years and was One of the students who won glory for himself and that institution in the Philip pines.
