THE COrMLIS GAZETTE, FRIDAY. JUNE 29, 1900. Roosevelt is a man of too large parts to have his light hidden by the vice-presidential bushel. Some other great men have filled this office and one at least, Thomas Jefferson , was afterward elected president. History will repeat itself. SOMETHING NEW. Met ibera of the State Board of Agricul ture Canvassing the Valley. TO CLEAR THE COMPLEXION OF BLEMISHES NOTHMB LIKE CUTICURA SOAP Scandals connected with the English hospitals in South Afriea are now coming to light. This condition of affairs may surprise those people who thought that the bad condition of our hospital service at the opening of the Spanish war was without a par allel and impossible in any other country. Yankee energy ever asserts it self. The little band of Ameri cans who took part in the assault upon Tien Tsen, were the first to break through the Chinese lines and they entered the city neck and neck with the British. The representatives of the other pow ers followed. Our admiral, Kempff, sent the first news of the taking of the city, and it was the first nws of the event official, or unofficial, to reach the powers. All this talk about the sacrifice of Roosevelt is rot. If Roose yelt did not want the nomination for vice-president he did not have to take it He is said to be more firm, and to have greater strengt of character than McKinley, yet he was unable to avert the catas trophe of a vice presidentia nomination, wot many years ago, a national convention of the republican party was set upon having William McKinley for its nominee for president. The dele gations were stampeding to him and already many had given him their votes. Yet this weak man had strength enough to rise, and in a speech of great force and earnertness, stem the tide in his favor. Twice did the office of president seek him before he ac cepted it. McKinley is no man of the hour. He has been a na tional figure for thirty years. LOCAL POULTRY SHOW. in Enthusiastic poultrymen this vicinity are exceedingly anxious that a local poultry show be held la December (next the exhibit to include birds from Benton, Linn, Polk, Lane and Lincold counties. During the last four or five years interest has so strengthened in this in dustrv in this section that it has come to be one of the most prom inent poultry districts in the state. This fact is coming to be thoroughly understood and Cor vallis was a close competitor aeainst Portland for the state poultry show when the question was before the association at Al bany last winter. The ipromoters of the scheme for a local show wish to impress upon poultrymen that now is the time to bearin preparing their birds if they wish to enter them next December. The American Standard of Pefection, by B. N. Pierce, is indispensible in bring ing fowls to perfection, for it de scribes the methods to pursue to obtain perfection and what this perfection is. It may be pro cured of book dealers. An important item, too, is that all coops should be of uni form size. The standard dimen sions are, length, 24 to 40 inches; height, 30 inches; depth, 34 inches. Holman-Rumbangh. Wiley Franklin Holman, of Fairmount, and Miss Edith Rumbaugh, of Albany, were united in wedlock June 21, at the residence of the bride's par ents in that city. Mr. Holman is one of Benton county's finest young men. He has spent his life here and in such a manner that he has won the respect and esteem of al He is highly educated, being t post-graduate of the O A C, That he has a bride in every re spect worthy there is no doubt, and many citizens of Corvallis and Benton county extend con gratulations and will feel honored to welcome the young: couple to their homes at all times. W. H. Wehrung, president of the state board of agriculture. and M. D. Windom, secretary of the board, were in this city Wed nesday. Their object is to in duce the county court of Benton and that of all other counties of of the valley contiguous to the railroads, to co-operate with the board in the matter of exhibits. They have the hearty support of Dr. Withycotnbe and others of this vicinity in their undertak ing. These exhibits are desired forwarded to Salem, where they will form a part of the state ex hibit of the fair, which will be held from September 17 th to the 22nd, inclusive. At the close of the fair each county will have its exhibit returned to it intact. It is then desired that the different counties will hold a fair of their own. Every place these gentle men have been they have receiv ed much support and are heartily encouraged over the prospects for the fulfillment of the scheme. There will be $10,000 given at the state fair as premiums on stock and farm products. At the state fair the following regu lations must be observed, among others: Every animal or article must be entered for competion in the name of owner or maker, whose number must be indorsed on the entry card. All persons who try in any manner tojperpetrate a de ception in this matter will forfeit all claims as an exhibitor. Entries may be made with the secretary at his office in Salem, six days befor the commence ment of the fair, or three days before at the fair grounds. Per sons taking stock must furnish their own feed. All entries must close by 10 o'clock p. m., on September 16th, and all goods, articles, and animals must be in place by 6 a. m., Monday, the opening day of the fair. Of course anything unavoidably de layed in transit an allowence will be made for. In the matter of prizes for premium-takers, horses of vari ous descriptions will be awarded sums varying from $ 1.50 to 20. Cattle will be awarded cash prizes ot trom socts to $50, Sheep, hogs, poultry, etc., will be given liberal prizes. In some instances a diploma will be given in lieu of cash. First prize for wheat of the different varieties will be $2.50 second prize, fx. Other kind of grains at the same figure. Hops will receive $20 for first and $10 for second best exhibit. The various grasses will receive good premiums, in tact, every branch of industry will be offered in ceuragement. The idea of having each conn ty's exhibit returned intact (ex cept in the case of perishable ar ticles) then to be placed on ex hibition in the county is a good one and will undoubtedly strike a popular chord. It would prove of great interest and profit to all to have a county fair, as many poeple could attend where other wise they would fail to acquire even the faintest idea of what the county is capable of produc ing. It would also afford a splendid opportunity for buying and selling stock for the general up-building of this industry. V ti - -v"?-v ma erea Dy $iuu. i ne postmaster and business men of the city feel that this has sriven IndeDendenne black eye and it has been the cause of the following explanation by Mr Wheeler, the postmaster: Ihe reduction was not caused bv reason 01 a railing on ot the busi ness ot tne omce; the business of the omce, he avers, has not fallen off, the receipts for the year being over $2400. The reason inferred by Mr. Wheeler for the reduction of his salary by the department is that his receip ta show less bvrea- son of the robbery which occurred here about five months ago, when a loi 01 money and stamps were taken. This necessitated the im mediate purchase bv him, from the funds of the office, of $75 worth of stamps from Dallas and Monmouth, and this $75 was deducted from his accounts; or, in other words, he was not credited with its disbursements. He took this course upon the ad vice of an inspector rather than wait for the government to replace ino stamps, me matter is now be ing looked up, and Mr. Wheeler is satisfied thatCwhen it is all straigh tened out his salarv will be nut back where it was.
