p r -. THE CORVALLIS GAZETTE. FRIDAY. AUGUST 10, 1900. , LOOK NEARER HOME. The Portland Telegram, which our esteemed contemporary as sures us is independent and its sincerity and accuracy cannot be doubted, contains the follow ing statements of apt and living truth : "The southern states are cheerfully nullifying the consti tution as regards the people's most sacred right that of suf frage so that it is manifest that the constitution does not "follow the flag:" even in our own coun try. Now these people who thus override and nullify the consti tution in the south aae nearly all democrats, and supporters of our friend, William J. Bryan, who, and whose friends, are vocifer ously claiming that the constitu tion should "follow the flag" in to Porto Rico and the Philip pines. This makes a mixture that needs unraveline a little to clear up the democratic position So far as appears the democratic party is in favor of disfranchis ing and even sometimes shooting niggers, in our southern states, but is morbidly and sensitively solicitous about the constitution and the flag in the Philippines, Perhaps before Mr. Jones and Mr Bryan, and other leading demo crats, make such a far and doleful howl, they had better look near er home and see how and why the flag and the constitution are operating in our own southern states." WHY SO SILENT? The democratic press attempt ed to make much capital out of the fact that in his speech of ac ceptanoe, President McKinley gave no attention to the subject ot trusts. Our local contempo rary in one of its characteristic effnsions, reached this conclu sion: "The silence simply means that trusts are for the president and the president is for trusts, and it is pure folly to deny it or attempt to believe anything else." Mr. Bryan delivered his speech of acceptance last Wednesday. It contained 8,000 words, and although we have read it pretty carefully we find no more atten tion paid to trusts than that ac corded them by President Me Kimey, in tact ne didn't give them any attention whatever Why was Mr. Bryan silent on the trust question? Does his action mean that Mr. Bryan is for trusts and that the trusts are for Mr. Bryan? North Carolina declared by an verwhelming democratic major ity last week in favor of govern ment without the consent cf the governed. An amendment to the constitution depriving ne crocs ot tne rig-nt ot sunraee in that state was an issue and gave the democrats a majority of bo, 000. The ground swell f Mr Bryan's protest hasn't reached ns vet. Speaking; of prosperity, here is a first-class item: The total exports of , American manufac tures in tne last nscal year were $432,284,366, against $339,675, 558 in 1899, an increase in a single year of $92,608,808. In no previous year has the increase amounted to $50,000,000. England i negotiating a war loan of $50,000,000. Citizens of the United States will pur chase $25,000,000 worth of her bonds. Think of it. A few more years of McKinley and we will be controlling the politics of England. We may decide to annex her as a colony. Bryan says Charley Towne's withdrawal from the vice presidential ticket was manly and patriotic. A large majority of Mr. Bryan' fellow citizens would say the same thing of him if he would emulate the example of Mr. Towne. Democracy used to openly es pouse free trade. The Kansas Citv platform contents itself with condemning the Dingley tariff, and it is pretty meek about that. Ladies, our line of cooking uten bils, in both granite and tin, are complete. Come and see tnem whether you wish to buy or not And don't forget that we carry a full line of fresh groceries. J H Simpson Try this Office for Job Work. Elks' Carnival.
