, ... . 1 1 ii ; THE CORMALLIS (MUt FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1600. Eor President: WILLI AM'McKINLEY of .Ohio. For Vice-President: THEODORE ROOSEVELT of New York: For Presidential Electors. TILMON FORD Marion County J. C. FULLERTON Douglas County W. J. FURNISH Umatilla County O. F. PAYTON Multnomah County GUILTY AS CHARGED. A contemporary quotes and endorses this statement from the Detroit Free Press: "The Phil ippine insurgents possibly are in quired to greater activity by the fact thafi their fate is a political issue, but under a republican form of government that cannot ba avoided." Here is a frank admission of a fact that Mr. Bry ay has sought to conceal with all the equivocation and adroit ness of which he is master. "The Philippine insurgents possibly are inspired to greater activities by the fact thai their fate is a political issue." Who made this question a political issue? Mr. Bryan. Then the Philip pine insurgents are inspired to greater activities through the 4f forts and encouragement of Mr. Bryan. To give aid and com fort to the enemy is treason, as defined by Webster. Mr. Bryan is on dangerous ground. The Press undertakes to excuse the fact thali the fate of the insur gents is a political issue, by ex plaining that "under a repubu dan form of government that cannot be avoided." It may be true that any question may be made a political issue, but de cency, patriotism aud common sense teach us that some ques tions are not debatable, and therefore have no place as issues in a political campaign. De cency would not admit of an is sue looking to the re-establishment of slavery, patriotism would demand that we part with no territory under the flag, and common sense- would dabar an issue questioning the laws of gravity. When the attention of a Bry anite is called to the increase in price of nearly all farm products during the past four years and none but the halt and blind deny this condition he meets you with th answer ' 'Oh, the prioe is determined by supply and de mand." Four years ago, when the prices of these commodities were down to bed! rock, ho rea son for this condition, as inter preted by Mr. Bryan and his dis diples, was "the crime of '73." Mr. Bryan so far lost sight of the law of supply and demand in 1896, that he said "if wo have the gold standard prices are as certain to fall as the stone which is thrown into the air." The gold standard is more firmly established now thaH it ever has been and the rise in prices dur ing McKinley's administration whatever thejeause brands Mr. Bryan as a false prophet, or un principled political agitator. In its last issue our contem porary gives facts and figures showing the increase in our trade with Oriental countries during the years from 1895 to 1899, aad says, "Why change our policy when we are doing so Well?" We won't. For the Orient. Mention has been made at varions times of the opinions of men versed in the matter regard ing the opening up of a fruit market in the Orient. It seems at last that a movement is under way which will result beneficial ly to our fruit growers. The telegram is authority for the fol lowing: One thousand boxes of apples and a shipment of prunes will leave on the next steamer for the Orient This, together with a. partial crop failure in the East will serve to stiffen the local market for apples, " which is already quite firm. Apples now bring from 75 cents to $1.2$ per box. The shipment to the Orient is in the nature of an opening wedge for a new and extensive market for Oregon apple WhUe partly an experiment, the ship ment is warranted because a former shipment of 200 boxes several weeks ago, met a friend ly market. The apples were wrapped and packed under the supervision of Colonel Dosch, secretary of the state board of horticulture, who is mstrumen tal in having opened the market through previous correspondence. The man making the shipment has arranged with a Arm here to' send other shipments in case the present one meets with the suc cess that is expected. Colonel Dosch persuaded the shipper to take along a consignment of the smaller varieties of prunes as an experiment. As shown by the correspondence mentioned, and by letters re ceived from United States Consul Miller, there is a good market for certain grades of Oregon fruit in China and Japan. Ship pers must learn, however, the needs of the market. It is necessary to cater to he Chi nese tastes and fall in with their ways doing business in order to secure their trade. Those who know, say that it would pay the fruitgrowers to send a reliable representative to study the needs of the Oriental trade. Then shipments could be made with an intelligent understanding, and sure results, which, when sent otherwise, must be some what in the nature of an expen ment. Real Estate Transfers.
