THE CflBWlllS ML FRIDAY, NOVEMBE3 f, 1020. Imtnbly petition the guidance of that Diviue Ruler who has never failed this government through all its vicissitudes from its be ginning to the present hour.'' WfiFRE OLD BENTON STANDS Of all gratifying results in the election Tuesday, the a&litudeof old Benton is the proudest. Her people have pronounced emphat ioallv for good government and national honor, and have shown that reason not prejudice sways them. They are practical, think ing men. not timid children to be frightened by bogies conjurod up in the imagination of some old grandmother. Their intelli gence has been insulted by the ory of "imperialism," "militar ism," and "hard times," and they have waived aside those who stood shouting this non sense in the path of progress. They have said, "Our flag in the Philippines waves not as tha banner of imperialism, it waves not as the banner of oppression, but- it waves as it waves here and verv where. the flae of freedom, of hops, of civilization A great emereency has arisen in our national life; but ws will meet it as men, not shrink like cravens." To the harpies who clamored for silver they have said, "The gold standard has been tri;d and nob found want ing. It has restored our credit; brought prosperity out of adver sity, and made us the richest nation on the globe." The wail of hard times has been met with a shout of derision, and their voice has been for the opening of our western ports to the mar kets of tho Orient, for with the trade thus secured this coast wil enjoy a prosperity unequalled in our history. Latest election returns show that McKinley lias carried Cali fornia, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wyom ing, West Virginia, Wisconsin, with a total of 292 electoral votes. This is 21 more electoral votes than tha tickcf received in 1896. BED ROUGH HANDS em hm (fijjjj) gg) jJDi SOUTH and EAST I VIA Many good men voted for Mr. Bryan out of party fealtj', who heave a sigh of relief at his de feat. They did not seem to comprehend the encouragement that his election would give to the lawless, the shiftless and im provident. They believed that congress would have prevented any .tampering with the curren cy, and many hoped that Mr. Bryan would be compelled to adopt the policy of the present administration in the Philip pines. They were loyal to a nartv name, but accept defeat with joy-fulness. REBUKE OF BRYAN ISM. Bryanism has been repudiated oositively and decisively re buked. While it is- not proba blft that McKinley could have been defeated by any democrat oa any kind of a platform, there is AO question that any promi nftnt l&adec in the democratic party running upon even the Kansas City platform would have made a better showing than did Mr. Bryan. The dangerous oharacter of the man, or rather the incendiary and despicable clement in politics which he ranresented. has had more to do with his defeat than qon traction and debased currency combined. Either of these issues was enough to defeat the best man in the country who would espouse them, but Bryan ism was the menace which called forth such emphatic condemnation. Brvanism the synonym for lawlessness, de structlon of government, and national decay. Mr. Bryan himself, w&nld probably not wish to see this end brought about, but his teaching bred this sentiment and encouraged those who espoused it, and his elec tion would have been hailed as a victory by every anarchist and socialist in the countey. His defeat, however, means more than a thrusting aside of this dangerous heresy. It means an emphatio endorsement of the gold standard, confidence in the present administration's ability to grapple wifeh the new respon sibilities laid upon us as the re salt of our war with Spain, and approval of a business policy which has brought the greatest measure of national prosperity ia our history. The next senate, assuming that the state legislatures will fulfill their duty and chopse senators to represent their states, will stand on a basis 01 iues- day's election, 49 republi cans, 27 democrats and 9 in dependents, with the leg islature 11? doubt in three states, with the privilege ot electing; four senators at this time. Representative Loudeu- slager, of New Jersey, secretary of the republican cougressioua committee claims the election of 204 republicans to the next house, a majority over all of 51. In 1896, that party polled 23 votes; in the election last spring 98 votes were cast for the prohibition candidates, and Mr. Wooliey secured 81 ballots Tuesday. Mr. Bryan lost his own pre cinct by a vote of 2c8 to 105, and McKinley made a gain over his vote of 1896 in Lincoln of 555 votes, carrying the oity. This was the most unkindesr cut of all. The "twenty-five or thirty fsrmer McKinley men in Cor vallis who were going to vote for Bryan' ' seem to have been the creatures of a fertile imagination. Not a drop of rain fell any whera in the United States on election day. Notwithstanding this dryness, the prohibition vote was considerable. Wanted. Old cast iron of any kind.
