THE nmUR GAZETTE, TUESDAY NOVEMBER 20, 1900. a&tBf&b& threaten those under his cha: WgWEn "nd b-v kindy counsel and ti yr JLSBUj . ly admonition lead them BHBr Nsk taese dangers. A NEWSPAPER MENACE. A newspaper, in competent hands, may be made a power for good ; but, carelessly or blunder mgly edited it becomes a danger ous weapon and a constant men aoe to the community. The edi tor who yields to the clamor of certain readers for the sensational or who publishes whatever ap pears readable, without thought or care tor the consequences may increase the circulation of his paper, but it will be at the expense of the moral and material welfare of society Evils exist, but they are more often aggravated than corrected by newspaper publicity. In cor rection of abuses the newspaper is most often necessary only as an heroic remedy, when all other remedies have failed. A case in point is the "Stu dent and Saloon' ' serial recently begun in our contemporary There is either much ado about nothing in this matter, or there is something seriously wrong somewhere. If the former, then the college and the community are being injured by the publi cation of articles which are bound to eive the impression abroad that the students attending the state agricultural college are be ing debauched by the saloons of this city, and our citizens and the authorities at the college should demand that agitation of the subject shall cease. If, however, the conditions ex ist which justify a crusade by the newspapers, then it is the part of duty and common sense to dis cover the cause of these condi tions, in order to correct them. Since the establishment of the college on the hill, we have had saloons in Corvallis, and the same saloon keepers have been here, or practically so. The Times says: 'Tor years the people of Corvallis and the faculty at the college nave been tree from vexation over the problem of students visiting saloons." Whv. then, do we now, after years of immunity, find ourselves confronted with this menace? The fault if, as we said before, these conditions exist lies as much with the college authori ties as it does with the saloon men. If affairs are as serious as we are asked to believe, the problem is a vital one and there should be no mincing ot matters, no compromise. If the authori ties at the college are unable to cope with this matter, they should be replaced by those who are. The Times says: "The town has been fortunate in hav ing saloon men ot superior re spectability." Then there is something radically wrong with the management of affairs on the hill, for the authorities in other institutions, not so fortunately located, protect their students without the assistance of the newspapers. Heretofore, with the same saloons and the same saloon men, "the college has been free from vexation over the problem of students visiting saloons." The Times has placed itself in one of two bad ways: Either it is again bidding for popular favor under the guise of being active for the public good, or it lacks the courage to fight the evil as it deserves. If the Times be lieves that the saloon men are entirely responsible for the de bauchery of the college students, then it is making a cheap bid for their favor, when it says they are men of "superior respectability." If the evil exists and they are en tirely responsible they are not men of ' 'superior respectability, ' ' and if the Times is in earnest it must muster up courage or re tire from the conflict. We are loath to' believe that conditions warrant the spasms of our contemporary. We believe that the saloon men of Corvallis will compare favorably with men engaged in the same business anywhere. We believe that the president or head of an educa tional institution like the Agri cultural College, aided and en couraged by the faculty, is the most potent factor in moulding the character and coiitroling the action of its students. The presi dent who has the respect and confidence of the students, will by vigilance detect evils which threaten those under his charge, time past wnen tlie (jAzette is con vinced that matters have reached a crises where the future of the college lies entirely in the hands of the saloon men of Corvallis, it will not expend its energies in throwing bpqnets at the proprie tors of these resorts, but will strive to discover and assist in re moving the conditions which have made this result possible. McKinley's Steadfastness. A friend of President McKiu lay ana senator rianna gives an interesting account of the birth and growth of the friend ship between them. The two men, who had met only once be fore, found themselves lodged in the same room whet they were delegates to the convention which finally nominated Gar field for president. Mr. Hanna favored Blaine and Mr. McKin ley was a thick-and-thin sup porter of Sherman. At one point a scheme was hatohed whereby the convention was to be stampeded for Blaine Its authors felt the need of telling Mr. Hanna at a verv unusual hour, in order that he might be ready to aid at the oritidal mo ment. They entered his room quietly, using the key of one of them who had a cot in the room occupied by both Mr. MoKinley and Mr. Hanna. In the dark ness they mistook McKinley for Hanna, and, gently rousing him, poured into his cars the scope and purpose of their plot. They told him with a wealth of detail, how Sherman was to be routed, and how as a climax the nomi nation was to go to Blaine "on a landslide. " 'It's all very interesting, gen tlemen," said Mr. McKinley, when they had finished, "but you have made a mistake. I am a Sherman delegate. The Blaine delegate" pointing to the sleep ing Hanna, "is over there." But McKinley made no use of the story thus disolosed to him and Hanna took careful note of his forbearing honesty. The republican convention of 1886 found MoKinley again sup porting Sherman. Sherman, however, was from the first doomed to defeat, and as the balloting progressed talk sprang up of nominating McKinley himself. Then the New Jersey delegation went into caueus and decided to cast its vote for him. Ohio, it was given out, stood ready to substitute McKinley for Sherman, just as, four years be fore she had switched from Sher man to Garfield. But at this point McKinley interposed with emphasis and vigor. He went to the New Jersey and Ohio delegates and forbade them to preseut his name. "I came here for John Sher man," he said. choice of my state, pie have commanded me to work and vote for him. It would be dishonorable to ignore this com mand. No delegate who would not wish to oast a reflection on me shall cast a ballot for me. And if I am nominated I will decline to run." This conduct gave Mr. Hanna convinoing proof of Mr. McKin- ey's honor, and from then their friendship grew.
