m mm mm, 'IMIft 111) SOUTH andSAST J TUESDAY DECEMBER, 11,1000. OUR REPUTATION ABROAD. "No town in the state of Ore gon has had more unjust calumny heaped upon it than has Corval lis," said Col. Holt in conversa tion with the Gazette man yes terday. "From the reputation of your city, gained abroad, I expect ed to find a little hell on earth here. Imagine my surprize, when I learned from personal experi ence that the moral atmosphere of this community was exception ally pure. No place in the Uni ted States has given me more earnest and respectful attention, or attended my meetings more liberally. The number of sign ers of the pledge has been won ful; 380 already and we will have 450 before the meetings close. So far as lies in my power I shall correct this unjust impression, and I reach the ear of a great many people. " The Gazette is not surprised at the condition spoken "of by Col. Holt. We have told our readers that such a condition ex ists and informed them of the reason for it. It is due to articles eminating from our own city, which are readily believed by those unfamiliar with the facts, and given wide circulation by the press of the state. Misde meanors of small importance have been padded and enlarged into column articles. Petty viola tions of the law, winked at else where, have been placed under a microscope, and published with every detail distorted. When items of this nature were ex hausted new ones have been im agined, and mysterious hints have been dropped of delicate morsels of sensation in process of incubation. Evils exist in every community. There should be and are proper methods for correcting them. Newspaper ad -vertising is not one of them. Nearly every paper in the state has had a lick at the ship sub sidy bill, yet it is safe to say that the editors of nine-tenths of these papers, not only have no knowledge of what effect the passage of the bill would have, but aside from the general idea that the bill provides for a bonus ef same kind, know nothing even of the text of the measure. Future embarrassment is often avoided by giving a matter thoughtful consideration before being brash with opisions-. A glanoe down over the edi torial columns of ouj numerous exchanges, disoloses the fact that the bulk of tie matter found there is writen by an editor rather thaa the editor. To copy without creditsmacks of plagiar ism, and gives the impression thai? the editorial utterances of our state press are controlled by some rust, or that great minds are prone to run in the same channel. During the late campaign, thft Eugene Guard had columns of sympathy for the poor traveling men who had been forced out of employment by the trusts. A few days ago the American Type Founders' trust had the nerve to go into the Guard office and seduce one of its employes into going on the road as a represen tative of that trust. Here is the irony of fate. Latest Music. Under this head will be founJ the latest popular music. Kept constantly 'on hand b'y I. R. Dr. James Withycombe, vice director of the Oregon Experi ment Station, arrived home Sat urday from a 3-months' trip to the Eastern states in the interest of the association. Dr Withycombe visited the Illinois Stale Fair, St. Louis Exposition, Madison -Square Gardsn Horse Show and International Livestock Exhibi tion at Chicago. He investi gated dairying and stockraising entensively and gained much valuable information, which ad ded to his already wide knowl edge along these lines will en able him to do -.mush for the farming class in particular, and the state in general. A two-column interview re plete with items of much inter est appears in Saturday's Ore gonian, in which Dr. Withy combe said in part: "The Chicago stftok show was simply immense, in fact it was reported to have been the largest show of the kind ever held in the world. It was certainly very appropriate to hold this mam moth stock show at the very seat of the largest livestock market in the world. "While it is perhaps to be re gretted that the Pacific Coast states were not represented at this great show, it is, however, gratifying to know that many of the premium animals are com ing to Oregon. John B. Stump, of Monmouth, purchased prac tically all of the prize-winning Cotswold ewes, including five imported from England, which were winners at the Roval Agri cultural Society's show there, and 45 of the pick of the best Canadian flocks. This is the largest purchase of high-olass Cotswold sheep made by an Ore gon breeder, since the noted im portation of Ladd & Reed's in 1871. "Thomas Brunk, of Eola, pur chased the champion yearling Cotswold ram of the season. This fellow is an imported sheep and a winner at the Royal. The Oregon Agricultural College has purchased a Cotswold and a Shropshire ram to head the col lege flocks. The Cotswold is an imported lamb and a wiiiner at the Royal. The Shropshire is from the noted Altamont flock at New York. The show yard record of these two youngsters entitles them to the honor of be ing the two best lambs on the continent. Frank Brown, rep resenting Charles E. Ladd; N. C. Maris, representing W. O. Minor, and C. B. Wade. Pendle ton, wer&at this great show nego tiating- for some bule-nbbon Shorthorns." Just received New Suits and Overcoal3 for men and boys, Ele gant Neckwear, Mufflers, Slippers, Fine SuBpenders, Silk and Linen Handkerchiefs, etc., at Nolan & Callahan's. CHRISTMAS does not mean much without home. HOME does not mean much without furnishings. FURNITURE makes the best Xmas gifts that can be bought. M The Kotisefwrnishers Notice for Publication. U. S.
