THE INDEPENDENT. SATURDAY, MARCH 29, lSi4. : "Refreshing. y'1'' 17 'f i. ii .m There is sora8thin exceeding v re- trailiing in the Republican call for this ;ountr. It expresses a desire that all who favor economy and good manage ment in governmental affairs should attend the Republican primaries. In view of tie fact that the, federal nia rhiiitt lias been run hr th Republicans j "for twcnty-thieo years and our county nn .state aliairs also tor a mr.jor por tion of that tims, this saems passing MCrange. jn u oe trua in&u mey ar willing to cry "jxiccavi" and admit that ' heretofore they have sins.cd, but to it "Beemi -Well, no wonder; for there Jievei was a child that ate too much ' taffy but what got sick at the stomachy The fellow -who imbibes too ranch of : the "iiow come you o" will often cx ' claim, "I will never do so any raore.'' It is ti ue th.tt Republican adrrntiistra tiohs have leen extravagant and cor Vrupt in the niaBaeracnt cf public mat ters and, therefore, it is proper that they should call to their assistance aux iliaries in order to secure economy and good management. Cut after all he Reps, will be compelled to nominate an old Independent, anti-Mitchell gentle . man for congress, before they caa have a shadow of hope for success. Tho Swamu Land Frauls- ' Some time ago the Oregonian, in - Very strong terms, charged the present .State ollicials with "standing in" with ;the swamp land grabbers, and made chaiges which, if true, require legisla tive interference. The law is plain ith.it it is the legislative will that but a limited acreage shall be sold to any one person. If it is true as staled that the , Stat officials are attempting to convey -4,000,000 acres to the syndicate of which Hen Owens is ihe head, it is in -.violation of tho statute. The people .Hhouldsee to it that their legislators -.a-e men who have the stamina and ability to unearth these frauds, regard less of who it may hurt. It is an ad mitted fact that it is for the best inter-. ests of the State that these lands .Riiould bo owned and held by actual ; settlers, instead of being held in large .bodies for the purposes of speculation We are of those who believe that the earth was madu for our habitation and that any system of government which attempts te parcel out to individuals or corporations vast tracts of the public domain for the purpose of speculation, is at varianco with tho best interests of the people and should bo held account- ruble for their actions. The executive department may be ; able to place these lands, which belong to the State, beyond legislative control It is a well established principle, both ."rin law and in oquity, that fraud will vitiate all contracts and if these swamp land grabbers have been guily of the ; frauds charged upon them by the Ore Ionian, they obtained no rights or equi ties by their filings, and 'the State offi--tials can give no greater rights than the 'Jaw recognizes. It is a matter for leg islative interference and should be probed to the bottom. Col. Hogg, president of tha Oregon Pacific railroad company, in the conclu sion of bis speech to the citizens of Corvallis, charges M. C. Gorge with 'defeating needful appropriations for .Oregon. le says. "Before bidding you good night, T must remind you of one or two things; 3 tuust take the liberty to tell you of a duty you owe to yourselves and to the btate of Oregon. It is be caiful who occupy the seats in congress. They are on-political so far as you are con deemed. Some of your representatives stand there opposing us a every point. ' Two rears ago, without proper assist---ance from the Oregon delegation, but ty outside influence, a bill was passed by which the house proposed to give us 60,000. The senate committee pro losod to give to Oregon $40,000, of course for Yaquina. Cut the senators from Orogon surrendered the Yaquina $40,000 for the mouth of ths Colum bia. Then followed an opon CgLt on ihe floor of the snnate, under the influ ence of wLicli Senator Slater boldly . proposed and con tended 'for a specific .grant of an extra $G0,000 for Yaquina. Hut when itrame back before the Jiouse your delegate in congress delib ..wately threw it away for party purpos- .a. I can prove this by documentary! evidence. This may be unpleasant, but ' it is the truth and tha whole truth. I stand by what 1 have said. I did not intend to say this touiht but my feel ings have carried :ae away. Higher mental and moral training is wbat the ople of this coast needt yet the Oregouian, the leader of the part great moral ideas, kick? be cause the school board of Portland de cided to build a high school building for tits liberal education of the youth 'of that city. The caucus of the Democratic members of congress, hold at Washington on the 25th mst., resolved to pass the Morrison tariff bill. Th resolution as passed by the caucus is as follows: "Resolved, that the bill generally known as the Morrison bill, shall be taken up for consideration at the earliest practical and reasonable Lime, for debate and after such debate that a bill be pasd for the reduction of duties and tbe war tariff tax." The resolution -was adopted, 110 to 57. This is a firm declaration of the Demo cratic position on the tariff question. Nothing but j Republican filibustering or executive interference, can. prevent the reduction! of taxes and giadual de cline in prices on the necessaries of life. A very important dispatch from Wheeling, West Virginia, informs us that the identical "scaffold upon which John Brown was hung has been dis covered. A fragment of this precious relic should be sent to Hon. Lisker Ochiltree, from the howling wilds of Texas, and by him introduced into con gress as a reaolation of condolence and and then adopted by a unanimous one vote. Thereafter the same, being nicely engrossed, should be sent to Queen Victoria and there would be war, sure. "John Brown's body lies, but his soul goes," etc. j A dispatch says that in tho event of the passage of the woman suffrage amendment in this State, Mrs. Abigail Scott Duniway will be a candidate for governor. The dispatch neglect te state the act will pass, and that afttr its passage Mrs. Daniway will unani mously be chose governor. But these diepatcbes are, i unfortunately, exceed ingly laodest. !
