cial Bulletin to day, commenting edi
torially on Charles Crocker's testimony
given yesterday before tQo TJ. S. rail
road commission, during which, he said
there was a time when he would have
been glad to quit with a clean shirt,
says: "Railroad millionaires are con
stant tara;et3 of self -sacrificing philo
sophists who propose to abolish pover
ty by abolishing wealth; but it never
occurs to them that wrecked million
aires often have a hard road to travel
and have been at 'Poverty - Carner'
themselves, even while" prosecuting the
most gigantic enterprises, from" which
the whole country Las been immensely
benefitted."
Crocker's testimony is quoted, and
the editorial says: "After all, those
millionaires do not always recline on
beds of roses; trouble and anxiety in
cident to their enterprises, even when
they are successful, are 'something
which anti-poverty philosophers proba
bly never experienced, but when as in
thi3 case, the whole thing was on tlie
verge of a collapse we doubt whether
they would be ready to exchange their
condition for that which was only at
tainable by the rich man, after such a
rough experience, even with a clean
shirt thrown in.
Such serious conflict of opinion
have arisen between the members of
the Civil Service Commissioner over
the question of the right of removal of
clerks, that there is some talk of the
resignation of the President, Mr.
Edgerton, who holds that the . appoint
ing power has authority to dismiss
employes in the classified service abso
lutely, without asking questions, while
his colleagues maintain that no re
movals should be made without speci
fying the cause that this power is ex
tremely limited. It is expected that
the President will be finally called
upon to settle the controversy.
If all who use distilled liquors '
would take the same quantity of malt '
iquora without inducing non-drinkers
