Kiiow-SiotlUng Poetry. The Know Nothings appear to have sprung up in the tar-off regions of Nebraka,as the following original poetry, trom the Omaha Arrow, would seem to indicate: DON’T KNOW, M ho is it moves with silent pace, ith brow serene and smiling face. Each woid and action perfect grace? “I don't know—do you?” Whose heart shines forth from kindled eyes, And listens to oppression's cries, And when in danger never flies?.- “I don't know—do’ you ? Who does not show, by tongue or pen, What he has learned —where he has been. And keeps his thoughts from other men ! “I don't know—do you?” Who, when he secs his country ruled, By men in foreign climate school’d, Thinks as a freeman he is fooled ? “I don't know—do you ?” Who, when he sees that Popish power Is gaining foothold every hour, Feels that a storm begins to lower? “I don't know do you?” Who feels that men born in this land, .And 'gainst oppression dared to stand, Are just as good as “pauper brand Vi “I don’t know—-dovou?” Cant Phrases! An exchange paper says; “The use of slang phrases is a very sure mark of vulgar ity. Of late, it seems to have extended among young men, and even among young women, too. It should be carefully avoided by both, as disgusting to every delicate and well educated mind. The Drawing Room Companion, in an article denouncing the practice, very justly remarks that the hu man speech should be noble and dignified, and worthy to express the thoughts of im mortal beings. Low ideas are always at tached to cant phrases, which must inevita bly exercise a degrading influence upon the mind. Low conceptions are as detrimental to improvement as wet and heavy plumage to a bird that would take a lofty flight. To show the extent to which the habit of using cant phrases is sometimes carried, the following conversation, which trasnspired in the Stout family, is reported: T declare to goodness! I really think Mr. Rustle is making up to our Josephine!’ said Mrs. Stout, after the gentleman refer red to had passed the previous evening at their house, staying to a later hour than usual. ‘You'd better believe it,” rejoined tiie young lady, playfully. “You may bet high on that,’ added Na poleon, who was in the act of lighting a real Havanna. ‘How do you like the ‘cut of his jib,' Tim othy?’ resumed Mrs. Stout, turning to her husband. ‘1 don’t greatly like his ‘rig,’ but Jose phine thinks he’s ‘some,’ ’ was the reply. ‘Whether you like him or not, its my opinion he’ll make a‘tip-top husband,’ ’ cou inued the mother. “Fut her through,’mother,’ said Jose phine. blushing, •(do in lemons I’ suggested Napoleon, smoking through his nose; a remark by tiie way, so ambiguous that it certainly must have puzzled other parties to guess at his meaning; but in the present case it seemed to be invested with perfect lucidity. ‘Napoleon. I advise you to ‘shut your hop per !’ ’ elegantly retorted the young lady. Mr. Stout proceeded to inquire if Mr. Rustle was a man of property, and was as sured by his better half that he had a ‘pock et full ot rocks.’ The husband and father then remarked to the effect that he had been more favorably impressed with Mr. Good won, a young farmer in the neighborhood, than with the gentleman under considera tion. Miss Stout manifested a different opinion on the subject, emphatically declaring that he ‘couldn't come in.’ ‘He’s over that way.’ said her brother, making a gesture over his shoulder with ids thumb. Animals of China. The denseness of the population has long since entirely driven out all wild quadru peds; and there are also few domestic ones, such as are found in Eastern countries.— Beasts of burden are in a great degree su perceded by the means of transport afford ed by the numerous rivers and canals, and by the coolies or porters, a class of athletic men, who take the piece of animals iiucar rying burdens and in dragging boats. An imals are excluded, to leave more food tor men. There are no meadow* for feeding cat tle; but the entire soil is used in raising food for the inhabitants. Wild cats are some times caught, and are considered a great dainty. Monkeys are found in the south west provinces. What few horses are found in China, are small, and very inferior in every respect. The buffalo is sometimes used in ploughing. Dromedaries are used in Pekin and i’artary. x'here are also hogs, goats and sheep. There is but one variety ol dogs in the country, an animal about one loot in height and two in length, re sembling a small spaniel. Hats u re very abundant and furnish the common people with meat. They are very large and de structive to crops. Of the birds in China, there are the ea gle, the falcon, the magpie, crows, spar rows, cormorants, curlews, quails, pigeons, larks, pheasants, the rice-bird, and man, species of aquatic birds. Cormorants are used by the Ciiiuese for catching fish. The falcon is imperial property, and the magpie is sacred to the reigning family. Fish form a very important part of the food of the Chinese, and great care is taken in raising them in artificial fish ponds. The gold and”silver fishes are kept in glass globes as ornaments. Among the fish eaten are the cod, sturgeon, mullet, carp, perch, sea brain, etc; crab-fish and oysters are com mon on the coast. The larger species of reptiles are un known in China. Frogs, lizards, and fresh water tortoises are common. Venomous serpents are very rare. List of Post Offices and Postmasters IN CALIFORNIA, SEPJ. Ist, 1854. Ao*ua Frio, Mariposa count} , B. I. The latter, having been afflicted by a severe at tack of ‘Cholera Infantum," was given up as incu rable by some of the most celebrated physician-, when she called on Dr. Czapkay, of whom she had heard very favorable reports, & who. after a short period, restored the child to perfect health. But Dr. Czap kav lias succeeded in aff irdingher permanent re lief. so that she can now enjoy life, which, for eight years, had lost all charms to her. She therefore deems it due to herself and to all sick and afflicted, to recommend Dr. Czapkay as one of the most skillful physicians within the United States. MRS. CAROLINE GRAY, Cor. SNYDER'S mode of treatng disea ses of the Eye differs materially from the course commonly pursued by Physicians. Be lieving that most diseases of the Eye have their origin in obstructed circulation or an impure state of the system, his remedies will be pre scribed with reference to the disease with which the patient may be afflicted: and by erjualizing the circulation, removing obstruction and restor ing the general health of the patient, the Eyes may be permanently cured without the use’of • costic or any of the irritating applications in general use. Dr. R. would say to those who have exhausted the skill of all others without relief, not to despair of a cure without giving him a trial, for in all cases where vision is not entirely lost, or the Eye not completely disorganized there is still hope. YOUNG’S I'M VAYE MEDICAL OFFICE- To the a f Dieted. —In this age of progress, when science developing itself in such a manner as to am,.. ' almost miraculous, everything in common‘i,hie is looked upon as not worth notice. In view this fact, Dr. Young, corner of Montgomery an California streets, up stairs, has concluded til leave the beaten track hitherto pursued by nKNt scientific physicians, (that of waiting for the puls lie to find you out alone,) and publish to the world, as much as may be, his knowledge of the healing art, to let those who are in need of as sistaifce know where they can find relief without fear of being imposed upon. In continuation of this subject, Dr. Yo nn „ would say that for the past ten years he has mir sued the practice of medicine in one of the Var gest cities of the United States, with the higher success, and Hint his standing as a physician j. without reproach, having at one time been h,. tnrer at the University of Pennsylvania on veins real diseases. Upon all these considerations, Pr. Young has confidence in introducing himself to the jnihli/ knowing that they will sustain well earned merit’ The following are a few of the many testimo nials which have appeared in the public journals of the last few years. [From the Boston Medical Journal.] Although we are opposed to the system of ad vertising, for good and sufficient reasons, still we deem it but justice to say that Dr. Young is one of the most industrious and intelligent votaries of the medical science in the United States. [From Professor Jackson.] The subscriber is personally acquainted with Dr. Young, and has seen much of his practice" and can bear testimony to his merits as a practi tioner. [From the New York Herald.] The eminence of this distinguished gentleman in his profession, and the very extended opportu nities possessed by him for the observation of ve nereal diseases, makes his services invaluable to those afflicted with the above complaints. [From the Whig and Advertiser.] All afflicted with private complaints, should if possible consult with Dr. Young, whose medical education is not surpassed by any physician in the country. In his skill, honor and integrity all may rely with safety, while most of the medical practitioners in the city are without honesty or respectability, their pretensions being grounded in ignorance and assumption. (And that there is, conscience uninfluenced, And suffered to speak out, tells every man,) Then it is an awful thing to die— More horrible yet to die at one's own hand. Self-murder—name it not! Shall Nature, swerving from her earliest clictat Self-preservation, fall by its own act? Forbid it, Heaven. The indulgence in secret practices is the mod certain, though not always the most immediate and direct, avenue to destruction. Physicians of all ages have been most unanimously of the opin ion that the loss of one ounce of the seminal se cretions, by unnatural aid or emissions, weakens the system more than the abstraction of forty ounces of blood. One of the fikst writers on medical jurisprudence states that three-fourths ol the insane owe their malady to such abuse. How importadt then, it is—for every one. hav ing the least cause to suspect any trouble in that way, to attend to it immediately; even one single occurrenca should be sufficient to cause doubt, and much more so if the person had ever indulged in the soul-killing habit. The treatment pursued by the justly celebrated Dr. J. C. Young in cases of seminal weakness, impotency, sterility, ner vous debility and paralysis, (the' last is tile most dangerous, and when it once occurs, incurable.) is not surpassed by any physician in the country. It is the same as that followed by him for vears. under the guidance of the world-renowned' Kee md of Paris, and Acton of London. Dr. Young's office is at the corner of Montgomery and Cali fornia -ts., where he can be consulted on that and all other private diseases, with the utmost confi dence and secrecy.
