SONG. BY B. BONCTO* MILNIB I wandered by ;be brooksidc, % 1 wandered by Ihe mill, I could not aee the brook flow, The noisy wheel was still. There was no burr of grasshopper, No chirp of any bird. But the beating of my own heart, Was all t u e sound I heard. I eal beneath the elm tree, 1 watched the long, long shade, And as it grew still longer, I did not feel afraid. For I listened for a footfall, 1 listened for a word, But the beating of my own heart. Was all the sound I heard. De came not—no he came not. The night came on alone. The little star? ?at one by one. Each on his golden throne ; The evening air passed by ray cheek, The leaves above were atirr'd, Bui the beating of my own heart. Was all the sound I heard. Fast silent tears were .lowing. When something stood behind, A hand was on my shoulder, I knew its touch was kind; It drew me nearer—nearer. We did not speak a word, But the beatim? of our own hearts, Was all the sound 1 heard. Creeping- Things. Let me put a spider into any lady’s hand. She is aghast. She shrieks.— The nasty ugly thing. Madam, the spi der is perhaps shocked at your Brussels laces, and although you may be the most exquisite painter living, the spider has a right to laugh at your course daubs as he runs over them. Just show her your crotchet work when you shriek at her.— “Have you spent half your days,” the spide, if she he spiteful, may remark, “have you spent half your days upon these clumsy anti-macassars and these j ottoman covers ; My dear lady is that your web ? If 1 were big enough, I might wiih reason drop you and cry out at you. Let me spend a day with you and bring my work. I have four little bags of thread—such little bags ! In every bag there are more than iOOO holes—such tiny tiny holes! Out of each hole threads runs, and all the threads—more than 4000 threads—l spin together as they run, and when they are all spun they make but one thread of the web I weave. I have a member of my family who is herself no bigger than a grain of sand.— Imagine what a slender web she makes, and of that, too, each thread is made of 4000 or 5000 threads that have passed out of her four bags through 4000 or 5000 little holes. Would you drop her, too, crying out about your delicacy ? A pretty thing, indeed, for you to plume yourselves on your delicacy, and scream at us.” Having made such a speech, we may suppose I hat the indignant creature ; fastens a rope round one of the rough points of the lady’s hand, and lets her self down lightly to the floor. Coming down stairs is noisy, clumsy work, com pared with such a way of locomotion.— The creeping things we scorn are mira cles of beauty. They are more delicate than any ormolu clock or any lady’s watch made, for pleasures sake, no bigger than a shilling. Lyonet counted 4041 mus cles in a caterpillar, and these are a small part only of its works. Hooke found 14,000 mirrors in the eye of a bluebottle, and there are 13,000 sepa rate bits that go to provide nothing but the act of breathing in a carp.— Diekens's Household Words. Evils o? Debt.— Debt is a perfect bore. How it haunts a man from pillar to post, larking in his break-fast cup, poisoning his dinner, embittering Lis tea! How it stalks from him like a living, moving skeleton, seeming to announce bis presence by recounting his liabilities. How it poisons its domestic jovs bv in troducing his infernal “balance” into the calculations of madam respecting the price of a new carpet, or a new dress ! How it hinders dreamy plans of specula tions, How it hampers useless energies cripples resolutions too good to be ful filled. At bed and board, by night or by day, in joy or grief, in health or sickness, at home or abroad, debt, guant and shad owy debt, falls as an incumbrance.— As no presence is too sacred, no ground too holy to deter the memory of “bills and notes payable,” from taking imme diate possession, so no record is so en livening, no reminisence more delicious than the consciousness that debt has fal len, like a January morning, twenty-nine degrees below zero. Friendly Advice. —Never lend an umbrella, or your name to a bill ; the chances are that one will not be returned, and that the other will. 1&> A man up town, with a view of keeping better time than he Has yet been able to do, has pickelcd down five Con necticut clocks and seven lepine watch es. M&‘ At Cork, a bill-sticker, recently, in posting up some bills relating to pur gatory, stuck one over a railway an nouncement, which at a little distance read—“ Reduced fare to Purgatory.” The artist who is painting a land scape on a political canvass, intends to have it framed with wood from some of fk# lags railed br ?h« politiajf The Violin Trick. At the end ol a week the dealer, not having seen the decorated gentleman, became suspicious He carried the violin lo an instrument- . maker, who offered him three francs for it. He acknowledged then, though a little late, that he had be n the dupe of i two adroit knav s, whom he described I to the police.— Translated from the Li Courier Des Etats- Unis. Young America.— “Robert,’’said an indulgent mother to a youngster of nine, who was amusing himself in the corner with pulling the tail of a respectable tab by cat, who with the utmost force of fe line lungs was expressing her indigna tion at such “unfeeling” treatment; — “Robert, what would you like to have me buy you for a present? Shall it be a top?” “A top ! If you want to know what I would like, I will (ell you— a box of cigars and a shawl!'’' His mother fainted in surprise. When she recovered, she expressed the convic tion that Robert was the forwardest hoy of his age she knew of, and she was quite sure he would make a great orator Some of those days. She thought proper to deny him the cigars, but as lor the shawl —perhaps you have seen a figure three feet or under, promenading Broadway, within the past week, closely enveloped in a thick grey shawl.
