Reformers Responsible For
the
Act

Victoria, B. O., Dee 13. The explo
sion at Canton, it seems, according to
recent advices, was caused by reform
ers who smufr.cled dynamite from Jla
caou anil stored it near the yomen of
the local magistrate and exploiVd it,
in the hope of destroying a quantity
of ammunition stored in the yamen.

several others have been arrested and

canopy over that most sacred spot upon
American soil. Plymouth rock, has been
defaced Sty vantlais. The act to all ap
pearances was deliberately thine. This
canopy is of granite, 3." by Ki feet and
:J'i feet high, being bui't iu the form of
four piers with arched openings and sur
mounted by a granite roof. The sipuiro
'Stones on either side of the Avestern en
trance are bruised and the angles broken
off, while marks of other hammering are
plain on various paiis of the base. A re
ward has been offend by the Pilgrim so
ciety for the detection of ihe vandals. To
make perfect rrpaiis on the canopy the
entire structure may have to be rebuilt.

The order follows the decision of the
court a week ago. whciein it declared it
was competent to try the ease of the at
torney general against ihe Standard, in
which it is sought to debar il from the
sta.e on the ground that it i a trust.

the loss of several of her hardy sailors,

sweeping the norlli Atlantic. Five of
the members of the crew aie married,

port Sept. 11. and since that time she has
not been reported.

TIONESTA. Pa.. Dec. 13. A tire at
Golim'.a. about 1- miles from this place,
resulted in the death of three children of
E. YV. Grubbs. The mother had gone to
call on a neighbor, leaving the children in
the house, when an unexpected pressure
j of gas came on, overheating the stove
and iguitmg tin; mulcting. When discov
ered, the lire had gained such headway
that it was impossible to enter the build
ing, and the lit t lo ones, who were aged ."i

to a crisp.

Ward ftreet died at t"-t. Vincent's hos
pital of barns received Tuesday after
noon. She was rooking, and a kettle of

Her hotly was horribly burned, and she
died six hours after the accident.
Cornell's Medical College
ITHACA, X. Y., Dec. 13 The execu
tive committee of the board of trustees
of Cornell university . has awarded Dris
coll Bros, of this city the contract for
bitildingr the new medical college on Cor
nell campus. The building will cost
?125,IKM and when finished will be the
prettiest on the campus. It will have all
the latest Improvements. It is to be com
pleted in 1U02.
