tasted tine and there was little of it
left when the merry diners had ap
peased their appetites.

TYRRELL IN HIDING.
Held His Watch on Workmen at taa

School Inspector Tyrrell donnetl the
livery of the sleuth yestei-day and took
ur a position in the brushwood near
the Mulcahy school for the purpose
of getting a line on the movements of
men in the employ of Contractor fow
ling, who were grading the school lot.
Mr Tyrrell pulled out his watch and
held it in his hand while the men
were filling a couple of loads of loam
and then emerged (from his hiding
place and walked across the lots to the
boss and inquired how long it takes to
fill a cart with dirt. The foreman said
that would depend on the size of the
cart, the number of men and the kind
of material. The inspector replied
that the men didn't load up fast
enough to suit him and that he had
concluded to suspend operations until
laborers could be secured who would
strike a better gait. This explains
why the work of grading the grounds
in front of the school was stopped be
fore the job was finished.
There was a whole lot of sport over
the affair and it seems the inspector
didn't get as much information out of
the scheme as he desired, for some
body caught on to him before the
workmen tackled the second cart and
gave them the tip and then they pitch
ed in and filled it up in a jiffy so that
thlre was a vast difference in the time
it i took to fill the first load compared
with what it did to do the second one.
Now the question is did the men move
with the same rapidity right along
and, is the alleged difference in the
time of filling the carts due to some
disorderly conduct on the part of Mr
Tyrrell's watch. Anyway, there la
nothing doing there to-day and the
subject is one of the principal topic
in the neighborhood.
Drowned la Oramoeto Hire.
ST JOHN, N. B., May 24,--A me
sage received here , from the south
branch of Oromoeto ! lake statea , that
John H. Thomson, a wealthy vessel
owner; E. P. Stavert, inspector of the
Bank of New Brunswick, and R. P.
Foster, manager of the Royal Bank of
Canada, all of this city, have probably
been drowned In the Oromocto river
while fishing. A dismasted boat over
turned which the three had occupied
has been found, but up to a late hour
the bodies have not been recovered.

known shipping firm of William
Thomson & Co. of this city and New
York. '

BOSTON, May 24. Elmer E. Leavitt
of Medford of the firm ef Lsmiiia &
Foster, wholesale boot and shoe deal
ers, has ben placed on trial in the
Suffolk superior 'criminal court here
on the charge of larceny of about
$100,000 from the National Union and
National Exchange banks. The gov,
ernment alleges that Leavitt borrowed
money from the banks by misleading
statements as to the financial condi
tion of his firm, r
