Bergen, of the firm of Ed ward Bergen & Sons, contractors and tuilders, and Miss Katherln G. ; Kane of South Main etreet. J - . ! ' St John's church never looked pret tier than it did this afternoon, a col lection of flowers and' potted : palms rendering additional charm to the beautiful edifice, which was filled to witness the marriage of Miss Eliza beth ; Kent, stone of Prospect street street and Frederick : Kirk Stone of Rochester, N. Y. The ceremony took place 'at 4 o'clock. , A-large crowd of people collected at the Naugatuck station yesterday noon to see the members of Company G, C. N. G., and about twenty-five of their friends off for the St Louis exposition. The boys made a stunning appearance and many good wishes for a safe re turn were shouted after them as the train whirled away. They will be ab sent ten days. A large. numberof well known mer chants,, after careful consideration, have decided to give their patrons the celebrated Hunt trading stamp, having come ; to the conclusion that as this stamp offers to the customer the best inducements it would be the most sat isfactory v form of stamp advertising that they -could adopt. . Accordingly ar rangements , have been completed to open a branch ' premium store in this city at a very early date. ' Negotiations for a settlement of tha Plant will case are reported to have been successful andthat such an a nouncement will be made in a few! days. The contestants of the will, Horace G. and C. EV Hoadley, who claim to be heirs at law of the late Mil lionaire Henry Bradley Plant, will," it is said, be paid a large sum In money in settlement of their claims. This li the only inkling so far of what the set tlement will be. Several, features of the case were to be disposed of by the supreme court .this month, but accord ing to the New Haven papers the case will not be tried and may be stricken from the docket. " . - Father McKenna, the eloquent Dominican preacher, was at St Fran cis Xavier's church yesterday and de livered two or three addresses. At the 9 o'clock service Father McKenna paid particular attention to the boys and re quested as many of them as were will ing to promise not to take God's name in vain to hold. up their right hands and make a solemn promise to that ef fect. , It was a most edifying sight to see the children with hands uplifted re citing the promise after, Father Mc Kenna, who,' although now over 70 years of age, appears to be In the en joyment of good health, and has lost none of the charm that made him a popular missionary father in Water bury and all over the New England states many years ago. Father Mc Kenna spoke to a very large congrega tion in the evening. Superintendent ' Hotchkiss of the street department had a force of men at work Saturday . night cleaning the paved streets. The hose was used wita good effect and Sunday morning ehucch goers wondered what had been going on while they slept. ; Mr "Hotchkiss is operating a road roller on Leavenworth Btreet to-day loosening up the macadam preparatory to giving it a top dressing with the sam6 kind of material. The machine is provided with a number of stout spokes in the wheels which stick into the erushe stone, thus softening it so that the new coating may be able to hold on . The roller works all right and is just as good as the old one for frightening horses. There Is nothing that ever came to town able to strike such terror into a horse as the sight of a steam road roller. No matter how old or feeble. the animal, it pricks up its ears and tries to do all kinds of stunts once it gets its eye on it, - The supreme court convenes in New Haven to-raorrow at 10 o'clock, and a very heavy docket is to be disposed of, the heaviest, in fact, in a great many years. , The appeal of Willis Vandemark is among the cases, and while that case has been given prece dence over all other cases from New Haven county there are eighteen cases from Fairfield county ahead of it It is very probable, however, that a great many of this number will not be heard, foT it generally happens that at the last moment a number of the cases drop out. The Vandemark case is the only one of a criminal nature on the docket and as the Issue involved is practically a new one, the contention I of , the appellant being that the facts In the case have been already adjudicated and determined by the superior court once before and therefore Vandemark should not again have been placed in jeopardy. The decision of the supreme court will be awaited with much inter est by the state bar. The fate of Marsh hangs on the decision. A man said to-day that he saw hone of the lightning last night and didn't hear the thunder. He retired early and slept like a top until 6 o'clock this morning The storm of last night was a brief affair, but it was a good one just the same and the few crashes of thunder made such a racket that many thought the houses were coming down.
