This January Sale closes with the month and with it closes one of the best bargain
sessions of the year. The reason: "We are just closing the year's business and get
ting ready for inventory." Rather than inventory many small lots we prefer to sacri
fice on the price and close them out, and to make those lots attractive we offer re
duced prices on all goods throughout the store, with a view towards lessening the latter
of counting and measuring. There is not a dollars worth of SALE goods brought
here for this occasion. Everything represented here is from our own stock goods
that were carefully selected by our own buyers, and bought by us at the lowest possi
ble cost from the makers, and our patrons need have no lear of being imposed upon
by the spectacular methods of the circus manager or the itinerant medicine man.

The report of the Cottnectieut Prison
association as In charge of the probu
tiou service of the state seems to show
a considerable number of probationers
unaccounted for. Thus in case of Hart-
I ford, is:i were placed on probation. Of
i these 125 mo reported as having ob
served the terms, 12 as having violated
lueir pronation, and 10 as having es
cape . from the jurisdiction of the
court. Tims out of 183 there arc 137
who are accounted for as having kept
or not kept probation, 10 as having
disappeared, which would seem to b
n part of not keeping probation, ami
8( arc not cientioiiftd in any way,
which seems to indicate that they also
did not keep probation, and raises thk
number in this class to Cs as against
125 who did keep their agreement.
In' New Haven l'J3 were placed on
probation, of whom 154 k'ept their
agreement, 14 did not. and cue es
caped, making a total of 1U8. and leav
ing 2t not accounted for who should
be added to the list of failures, making
the number of these 41 as against 15
vho did right. .
In Water-bury the showing was re
markably good. The commitment
were 245, of which 180 were reported
to have lived up to their parole, leaving
only 5ii who actually or constructively
broke It.
In the whole state the commitments
were 1.775. those who kent term 84t
I those who did not 102, those who es
caped jurisdiction of the court 40. and
those accounted for in none of thest

Bos Government Defeated.
OTTAWA. .Tan. 26.-It looked last
night as though the Ross government
was defeated in the provincial elec
tions In Ontario. The returns show
twenty-nine Opposition and thirteen
Liberals. Ottawa elected two Liberals.
Both seats were formerly Conserva

SANTIAGO. Chile, Jan. 2.-Tenders
are asked for to build breakwaters,
moles and maritime defenses at Val
paraiso bay, to cost $12,500,000.

When the well at the Osgood Hifi
school In New Britain was being -dus
it was found necessary to go to a depth
of 1.10 feet to obtain water. In ex
cavating for the seven foot cellar of
thw school a vein was struck which let
considerable water Into the cellar aud
had to be bailed out.
During the wait for witnesses from
New Britain,, who had been delayed
by the severe snow sform, counsel iu
the suit of Mrs Annie Byrne against
the Hartford Life Insurance Co, which
was on trial In the suierIor court at
Hartford before Judge Edwin B. Gager
and a jury Thursday of last week and
Tuesday, came to au agreement about
tl:.10 yesterday, and the suit was with
drawn by the plaintiff. By the terms
of settlement Mrs Byrne Is to receive
$100 and pay all costs.

Mr Barnes stated Tuesday evening that
