There are few public men who ; get more fun out of life as they go along than does ex-Senator "Biiri Chandler . of New Hampshire, for some years past the head of the Spanish Claims Commission. No public question of any kind arises that does not Interest Chandler, and on which he "does not have his say In one form or another, and to which he does not usually contribute illuminat ing thoughts and good advice. On the ether hand, there is hardly a popular subject which does not afford Chandler vehicle for bis well known wit and satire. . ; ;-. The ex-Senator has been having a lot of. fun recently. with candidates for the presidential' 'nomination in 1908. He first sat 'down and wrote a, letter 4o Vice President Fairbanks in which be - praised the latter's ability aa statesman, expressed admiration for bis conservatism, predicted great popu larity for him as a candidate., and wound up by saying that he, 'Fair banks, was the Ideal candidate for the presidency ' In 1908. T is said there Is a prospect that Mr. - Chandler may - again be senator from Xew Hamp shire. He would be welcomed back in the senate, where be was one of the liveliest members of that rather som bre body. He was a good deal like a wasp, stinging this one and that, and raising a commotion generally. Mr. Chandler wearied sometimes of the dullness of the senate, and be would purposely start a turmoil, m order to Uvea things up. On a particularly dull day, Chandler would nervously twist about In his chair, glance np at the press gallery, and, if be noticed some of bis newspaper friends there, would give them a glance, as much as to say, i ljwt1r Ant fnr ctmA (im Then the Senator would inject him self into the debate, no matter what It 1 np the opposition and precipitate a j vitriolic controversy. It did not matter what subject was under discussion, , Chandler could always ose It as aa ex cuse for saying something that would stir np the democrats. ' When Senator Bea" Tillman first came to the sen ate be was Chandler's particular victim. Tillman did set under stand Chandler, aad . looked upon the latter , as possessing all the narrowness and partisanship that ths southerners had been led to believe characterised New Englaaders. It was tbe rule, therefore, when Chandler Urge, commodious portico oa the south side ' of tbe white bouse ts admirably adapted for these open air meals. Awnings protect the table from the glare of tbe sun. but tbe' breetes blow across the portico while the songs of tbe birds in the trees that shade tbe mansion and the scent of the flowers from tbe white , bouse lawn add to the pleasure of the repast Tbe president and Mrs. Roosevelt of ten have a number of friends tq break fast on the south portico of the white bouse. Occasionally luncheon Is served completely out of doors, but that la purely a family affair, and is largely in the nature of a picnic on tbe green lawn. The president Is also very fond, after a tiresome day's wort In the executive offices, and a rigorous rids or walk through the suburbs, of sit ting down to dinner on this broad porch, where the breezes, sweeping up the Potomac, make the atmosphere delicious and cool, while the picture stretches of the white house grounds before him, framed by tbe green hills of Maryland and Virginia, with the placid Potomac . and the green and the Mall Immediately In front of him, affords him the deepest pleasure. These out-of-door dinners are lingered over with great satisfaction, and the guests often sit there smoking and ' chatting until the twilight fades into 1 the nleht I . Mrs. Roosevelt often has S o'clock tea served on this veranda, a custom that has come down from the time of Dolly Madison. fa f - NOTICE ! HE late Senator Harms, of Ohio, was the originator of the al fresco breakfast. She made a corn beef hash that became famous through out official and diplomatic circles. Nothing like this toothsome dish had ever appeared on a Washington table. Its fame spread far and wide, and Sen ator Hanna never lacked for guests. Two or three times a week Presi dent McKinley would walk over to Hanna's house, and In the bracing spring air, amid the flowers, listening to the music of ths birds and reveling in the celebrated hash, the late presl 4nt WQpJ4 throw, off the cares of oOca, aad thoroughly enjoy himself. Presi dent Roosevelt also tasted this cele brated dish, snd insisted on obtaining tbe recipe from Senator Hanna. and since then corn beef hash, a la Hanna, has been a standard breakfast dish at the white house. Mr. Roosevelt is a hearty eater, and desires plain, sub stantial food.
