The board of public works met last night and transacted a big grist of business. The contract for paving Benedict street with Metropolitan brick wag awarded to Keating & Egan for $3,984. Edward McManua got the contract for paving Scovill street and the square at North Main and Cooke streets, with Mack bricks, for $2.6214 cents a yard. The con tract for the construction of sewers in several streets went to Keating & Egan for $2,101.45. The hearing regarding the widening of Grand street to a uniform width of 63 feet brought out a vigorous pro test from Mrs Holmes, Mrs Merchant and Dr Robblns. Others had no ob jection. No action was taken. Favorable action was taken on the proposed layout and grade for the ex tension of Railroad Hill street to South Leonard street. The communication from the alder men relative to the congested con dition of affairs on South Main street was ordered forwarded to the com pany with a request that something be done In the premises . - .Favorable action was taken on the application for a sewer In Orchard street. A ten foot building line was recommended for the west side of Railroad Hill street and fifteen feet on the east aide. Parties Interested In the construction of a sewer in Col umbia boulevard were called. No ac tion was taken, hut some work will be done there this fall if the money holds out. The clerk was Instructed to notify the rnlted Gas Improve ment Co. that the pavement relald by the company on Meadow street Is not satisfactory. The superintendent of streets was aKked to report what be thinks of the pqvlng done by the trol ley company on Bank street between the Naugatnck river and the railroad. The difficulty was over a dress which Mra Pace, nged 15 years, had making by Mrs Rosso. . Both live on Scovill street and when the ufteen years old wife called upon fier dress maker orf May 2rt, the dressmaker said the dress was not ready and she could take it away and have It made where she liked. V "All right." said Mrs Pace, but as she was turning to the door the dress maker locked it and put the key aside. "NoV," said she, "you owe tne fifty cents on the last dress and you will not leave this place until you pay it." Theu there was trouble. Mrs Pace said the dressmaker attempted to stab her with a lone- shears and called up on her relatives to assist in the assault.' The response was hearty but in the crowd was IfrS' Pace's husband who took, her by the ear. gave her a spank ing and sent her home. Half a dozen witnesses were heard on each sido af ter which Judge Teasley imposed a flue of $10 and costs on Mrs Pace.
