The official report Issued at Cal cutta states that the area under cot- rn 4n Tndtn a nonrlv A million APTRSI ! larger than last season. The output is estimated at 5,105,000 bales, which . the rec0rd tllei largest totel hither- to attained being 3,722,000 In 1904. Boll worm has disappeared from the Punjab. Sind furnishes 2,000 bales of Egyptian cotton. New York at present ? putting up nineteen skyscrapers and the ground area upon which they will stand Is only a little more than three acres. Yet 100.000 persona will be housed on these three acres every day with- out crowding. A most Important economic factor Is the wonderful speed made possible by the use of steel and hollow-tile In, skyscraper construction, effecting an estimated saving of from six to twelve months. This means a saving of $300,000 in rentals on two average buildings. Hollow brick have revolutionized the methods of modern building. Those who think that skyscraper building is being overdone may be surprised to know that ions before a new one Is finished a large part of its space la rented. The safety of the flre I proof skyscraper Is no longer ques tioned. Architects and builders are agreed that, the steel-framed struc ture is the safest and most enduring , type. This Is due mainly to the fact that the terra cotta fireprooflng used to protect the steel has made even the tallest and heaviest building ' practically immune from corrosion as well as from the danger of con flagration. Senator Beveridge ha. declared hi. Intent'on of .peaking on hi. bill for the regulation of child labor. . That bill, it will be remembered, provide, that the products of any factory or mine In which children under 14 year, of age are employed or permit ted to work shall not be carried by any Interstate rallroaa. The need of such a law is apparent to every one who has studied even casually the evil of child labor. In the house Monday the proposition for an in quiry Into the sanitary and moral conditions surrounding the employ ment of women and children wa. de bated with some acrimony. In order to make the inquiry an approprla- tiou will have to be made and the bill a. presented does not carry any appropriation; probably, therefore, there will be nothing of a practical nature resulting from It The ex treme states' rights men insist that this evil should be handled by the , states. It seem. tlTat. a. a matter of ' political theory and logic, this I. true. A. a matter of practicality It ha. - been proved a failure. The growth of the evil of child labor In . southern state, has been not merely J a local scandal, but a national one. And yet the cotton manufacturer, of . ...... . ... Georgia say. "What can we do? If llmftlng the hour, of employment or women and children, and our neigh- bor. South Carolina, passes no such law, we have to meet unfair competl- tlon forced upon us by our own law- makers." The argument 1. plausible. almost unanswerable. But when the United States government attempts to make a law covering the same subject, and applying to all Mate, and commonwealth, alike, these very people rise In indignant protest de- claring that the sacred right of local self-government in Infringed. Must childhood be stunted and womanhood depraved that a political theory may be upheld? HEARD VS PASSING. A wtMnan In New Tcrk in golnc to rffi hentelf off. The United State JJSS not slgn her crew before she departed from this port. She could not even clear her cargo here. Upon arrival on the sound the Alta entered at the customs house at Port Townsend, under protest, it Is said, and from that port she will have to clear. Captain Thonagel states that the veseel encounters the same diffi culties wherever she goes. The ex perience is no new one. The Alta's last fag was the Chil ean. She is owned by Amer'cans at Manila, and when they bought her she was put under a Philippine regis ter for the coasting trade there. The end of her trouble, which has excited more or less comment on sundry oc casions, will be when the Philippine islands are declared a territory. The Alta will then get American register, with Manila as her home port. Just as a number of vessels obtained American register when Hawaii was made a territory. The AltaJs a four masted steel barkentine of 1.332 net tonnage. She was built In 1900 by R. Duncan & Co at Port Glasgow and Is owned by A. P. Lorentzen. In Lloyds register she Is given as Chilean, under which flag she originally sailed. Naturally the Alta experiences difficulty in ob taining a crew, as no government ZtZ Udger offlc'als of any country will sign . CUBI0SITY HUNTING. ' Some Instances of. Finds of Much Value in Unexpected Places. Some years ago, in Yorkshire, a man went to a farm for a day', hooting with the farmer. In the morning, as they were about to start, pointer dog was unkennelled to ac company them. The sporting friend noticed that attached to the dog', collar waa apparently a brass ring, which the farmer explained his ser vant had ploughed up the day before and tied to the collar. When the ring was removed the . friend pro nounced it to be gold, and he of fered to take it Into town and get It valued. The farmer assented, but he said he would ratner have some sliver spoons than money. These the Jeweler readily agreed to give and he afterward sold the ring for 20. The next time the ring changed hands it fetched 850. and It Is now in the Brlttlsh Museum. It may be said that this 1. quite an exceptional case, says a writer In Chambers'. Journal on curiosity hunting, and a man might live a hundred years and never get such a chance; but how many people make ithe attempt?
