Well KnoMi People Who Have Been i Called Away. Franklin L. Peck, aged 38 years, dUd last night at The Elton, after a short illness with pneumonia. He was at the auto show In New York and returned last Monday almost too weak to tell what was the matter with him. Medical attendance was provided and his wife, who was vis iting In Philadelphia, was apprised of the seriousness of the situation and hastened homeward. It was thought that be was on the mend, but last night he took a sudden change and passed away. Mr Peck was one of the best known men in Waterbury, and as few knew that he was ill, his death was a great sur prise. He was a son of the late Mr and Mrs Asa Peck and was born on West Clay street. He inherited a large estate from his parents and was planning to build a country resi dence on his newly acquired proper ty on the Meriden road. : Besides his wife he leaves .an uncle and aunt Horace , Peck of Cheshire and Mrs H. A. Matthews of Southbury, whose husband was a former mayor of Waterbury. u Mr Peck was worth about $100,000, and as he left no will it is likely that ac cording to law one-half of this and S2,0uu will go to his wife and the balance In equal proportions to his uncle and aunt. The body was re moved to the residence of his wife's mother, Mrs Lot, on Maple street, from where the funeral will be held Monday afternoon. Mrs Mary A. Reed, wife of John W. Reed, died this morning at her home, 62 Cherry street, after a very brief . Illness with pneumonia. Her husband keeps a grocery store near by, and. Mrs Reed was helping out at the counter yesterday for a while. She complained some of a cold, but nothing was thought of it until along towards evening, when It was decided to call In a physician, but all his ef forts proved of no avail. Mrs Reed, whose maiden name was Mary A. Henzle, was born in Great Barring ton, Mass, but removed here with the rest of the family when she was but a couple of years old, and had lived here ever since. She was edu cated at the convent of Notre Dame and had a wide circle of relatives and friends who will be shocked to hear of her death. Besides her hus band she leaves one daughter, Ger trude, and two brothers, Martin and ..ohn Henzle. The funeral will take place to the Immaculate Conception church Monday" morning at 8:30 o'clock. The burial will be in St Joseph's cemetery. Foreign Office Said to Bold Swettenham's Resignation. "PERSONA "HOI GRATA" AT KINGSTON Londoa Advices Bar That There It Is Held Impossible Far Jamaican ' Rnier te Remain at Post After Davis Incident. 1 LONDON, Jan. ?8. An unofficial re port here says that the expressions of regret made by Foreign Secretary Grey and War Secretary Haldane to the United . States government with reference to the Swettenhara-Davls in- ; cident at Kingston have been supple mented by a letter to a similar gffect from Governor Swettenham himself, who hus Indicated his willingness to retire from his post i The colonial office would not confirm or deny the report that the governor ? has offered his resignation, but there is good reason to believe that be has placed his resignation In the hands of the colonial office officials. , It has been fully expected here that a solution of the difficulty would be found in Swettenham's resignation, and the reply to inquiries received at the colonial office tended to confirm the report that the governor had intimated his willingnes to retire from his post It has been freely stated In the colo nial and other government offices that it was quite Impossible for Swetten ham to continue in office, not only be cause of the incident Involving the withdrawal of the American Warships from Kingston, but also on account of the protests against - bis conduct and retention of the governorship received from the Inhabitants of Kingston. - Kingston . advices say it has been proved that the landing of the Amer ican marines at the time of the earth quake and every -move made by Ad miral Davis was with the knowledge, consent and at the request of either Governor Swettenham or his Immedi ate subordinates. The proof has been furnished by William H. Orrett, the American vice consul there. Mr. Orrett declared that Governor Swettenham accompanied a hundred of the Indiana's sailors to the prison, where be had eight of the convicts flogged for mutiny. Red Book Cornea to the Front Again.
