It Is thought that the hearing will be largely attended as there Is a great deal of Interest in Vet matter. The hearing will be on the petition to lay a track on South Main street. Florence, the young daughter of Mr and Mrs Jeremiah L. Mahoney of Elm street .gave a birthday party Wednesday afternoon, about 30 of her young friends being present. (James were played, vocal and Instru mental music was rendered and re freshments were served. All present had a very enjoyable time. Mrs Alice Schlosser, wife of Adolph A. Schlosser of Co Central avenue, died yesterday. Besides her husband she leaves one daughter and two sons. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at her late resi dence. The Interment will be in Riverside cemetery, Waterbury. The regular meeting of Aetna lodge. Shepherds of Bethlehem, will be held to-morrow night In Pythian hall. There will be Initiation of candidates and after the degree work refreshments will be served. Members are requested to bring cake. The electric street lamps will soon be lighted at 5 o'clock In the morn ing for the accommodation of those who have to go to work very early. The supply of tickets for the Yale- Harvard football game does not equal the demand and there will be many disappointed who Intended to take in the game. A meeting was held last evening at St John's rectory by the different sopieties connected with the parish to compieie arrangements tor tne coming fair to be given for the bene fit of St John's church. The fire department was called to the residence of J. D. McGowan last evening about 9:30 and responded quickly to the alarm. The Are which was caused by a lamp being set di rectly under a chothes frame which contained most of the family wash ing. North Canaan The churches have been notified here that owing to the scarcity of water in the reservoir on Canaan mountain that the use of wa ter motors in the church organs will have to be discontinued. Bridgeport Stricken with heart failure while. - walking -in .Warren street yesterday afternoon, Benjamin Kish, executor of the P. T. Barnum estate, one of the city's foremost citi zens, expired within , a moment. Willimantic Postoffice Inspector Clarahan and Deputy Marshal Smith came here from Providence, R. I., yesterday, the latter arresting Mamie Coleman, a colored waitress, on the charge of sending an obscene letter through the mail. The woman is said to have confessed to the Inspect or that she wrote the letter in ques tion, which was addressed to a young man In Norwich. Willimantic The usual tranquil ity of the school boar meetings was disturbed last Wednesday evening while two of the members entered into a dispute over hiring teachers. The existence of a strong feeling among the Roman . Catholics of the community in regard to this matter was brought out and it is destined to be the subject of serious considera tion before it is through with. Willimantic The buffet car on the express train from Boston due here at 4:07 p. m. jumped the track about a mile east of Hampton jester, day afternoon and delayed the New York express about two and one-half hours. The cause of the accident is unknown, but it was very fortunate that it did not send the train down a forty foot embankment. The wheels on the forward trucks of the buffet car were so badly damaged that the car had to be left at Hampton. Ansonia While crossing . the bridge over the Naugatuck river, coming from the west to the'i east side, a woman dropped a dollar bill into the river below. After watching it for a few moments the woman went on her way. Several persons well known about town, soo beard about the woman's misfortune and hurried to the bridge where they saw the bill floating away on the top of the water. Among those who gath ered at the bridge was "Bobby" Newcombe. who hurried to a saloon, donned an old pair of trousers and again hurried back to the bridge. He climbed over the railing,, dangled a moment from one of the steel beams, and dropped to the sand-bar below, a distance of about forty feet. The failure of the Elks to vacate the rooms as soon as expects 1 naturally prevented the Goldon Eagles from moving at the time ex pected. On the opening night of their new quarters the lodge expects to initiate about 100 members. An entertain ment, card playing and dancing were the main attractions.
