A notable event in local theatrical will take place at Poll's theater thin evening when Waterbury will Bee for the first time Harold It. Durant s new play, "A Man and His Mate." ; Many of Mr Durant's friends here have ar ranged to give the local playwright a warm reception and tue occasion will be one long to be remembered In local theatricals. It will be a distin guished gathering of not only local people, but well known New York theatrical lights will be on hand lo see the new piece. A company of quality has been gathering for Mr Durant's play. . Miss Hilda Spong, the the well known English actress, bo came so interested in tbe piece that she purchased it and will play the leading role. . Miss Spong stands high in the theatrical world, having been leading woman for Henry Miller, William R. Crane and William Fa versham. One of the hits of . the piece is said to be Herbert Percy, the English actor, formerly leading man for Miss Margaret llllngton. Mr Percy plays the role of Choo, the Chinaman, and the characterization is said to be a wonderfully clever bit of acting. The supporting company includes the names of many well known players. "A Man and His Mate" opened Monday night to a crowded house at South Norwalk. There were a number of metropoli tan theatrical men present and all had the highest praise for the play and the production. The scenes itc laid in the great southwest, near the Mexican border, and the scenic !n- vesture is said to be unusually elabo rate. As for the play Itself, the heroine is a product of eastern edu cation and culture, placed in a set ting of wild western atmosphere. The action is swift and intense and there are thrills in many of the scenes. The play shows the gradual transition of the highly bred heroine from a state of passionless torpor to the level of the' normal woman, who loves with an intensity which is al most primitive. " The play is an ab sorbingly Interesting study. It will be seen at Poli's this evening and on Thanksgiving afternoon and evening. Few plays have been written with a Canadian setting, and the pro nounced success-of "The Wolf," Eu gene Walter's story of life in tha Canadian woods, should prove oi great interest to all Canada's sons and daughters wherever they may be. The scene in which Hilda discover the difference between the "good love" of her honest French-Canadian admirer and the "bad love" of the engaging but unscrupulous American engineer, is described as very effec tive. "The Wolf" will be played at Poli's Friday, November 27, matinee and night," and an elaborate scenic display is promised. Prices, matlaeo 25 cents to 75 cents, evening 25 cents to $1. VMMMMIMt "OLD HEIDELBERG." It la estimated that a patronage of from 1,200 to 1,500 people will be present to-night at the opening of Waterbury new theater to greet tue David M. Hartford stock compauy in Its inaugural appearance with "Old Heidelberg." So much has been said and written about the project capital ized by Waterbury business men and others from the surrounding towns that naturally a great deal of curiosi ty has been aroused in what the new stock company Is to offer the public. First of all the new stock theater has the largest seating capacity of any amusement house in this city and is large enough to meet the growing needs of a hustling and progressive city. The American Seating Co ol New York city has installed modern seats within the ground floor of thd new playhouse and extensive im provements and decorations have been all about the big building, in cluding the orchestra circle and an addition to the stage. Among the patrons this evening will be a large body of Elks, Eagles and Knights of Pythias, who are enthusiastic friends and supporters of David M. Hartford, the leading man. That Mr Hartford has a wonderful following in this city Is not to be disputed. That he has surrounded himself by an exception ally capable and high class company of actors and actresses is another feature which will count in tbe task of presenting for the consideration of Waterburians only the most success ful and popular tried out metropoli tan productions of note. In "Old Heidelberg" the people will have abundant opportunity to witness some excellent scenic effects as well as costumes far beyond the ordinary. To-morrow, Thanksgiving afternoon and evening, there will be two per formances and the advance sale has been large enough to justify the as sertion that It will be a banner week in Waterbury's theatrical history, marking the epoch of independent theatricals. Popular prices will at all times prevail and those who havj witnessed Mr Hartford's careful and accomplished work as an artist on past occasions need have no hesitancy of the result. Of course "The Blue Mouse" Is not a . blue mouse at all and is in no manner re lated to the purple cow or .other such fantastic creatures. "The Blue Mouse" is feminine and human. The name is merely a nickname given Paulette Devine, nee Maggie Mc Hooley, who has acquired fame as a Salome dancer and who is the princi pal figure In the Intrigue of the com edy. ; The members of the company want a real blue mouse as a mascot for the organization. As such a crea ture, has never been discovered the stage manager threatens to dye the white mouse blue for the occasion Prices, matinee 25 cents to 75 cents, evening 25 cents to $1.50. "THE MERRY WIDOW." The Merry Widow hats have been with us in their immensity for some time, and the woman from Water bury to Los Angeles who does not know them is very likely an Indian, yet something bigger and better known than the . most tremendous Merry Widow hat will be in evidence at Poli's theater soon. Leading the long cast, Miss Mabel Wilbur In the title role, deserves to be called the best dressed woman on the musical stage of America, and her gowns aa shown in each of the three acts ap proach the superlative. Charles Meakins.has the reputation of living up to his princely role on the stage and making the most or bis oppor tunities as a singer and dancer.
