Whether Julius HolTnian, of Cairo, 111., who cut his throat todav in bis room mi li::C North Hroailway, tried to die be cause of his failure to obtain employ ment., or chose a desperate means of gaining admittance, to. the city hos pilal in the hope of meeting his wife, is a quest Ion the police are trying to solve. The man Is In a critical condition. The police say the man's wire left him several years ago, and since then he has soughl her vainly. They say he heard she was employed as a seam stress at the hospital ami that tli?v suspect him of having slashed h!.- throat in order to lie taken to that in stitution in the hope, that he would lie able to see her and effect a reconcil iation. Authorities at tlie hospital say a wo man named Hoffman was employed there several months ago, but that I hey do not: know where she Is now Owing to i lie wound in the man's throat he has been unable to make a statement. Friends of the man sa had told them lie was a widower and assign his failure to find work a; i he cause of his act. Hoffman came to St. Louis a week ago from Cairo and every day wem out to look for work. He paid an early visit, to a railroad office near hi boarding house today and came back very much dispirited. Mrs. Gene Gangloff heard a pecu liar noise in his room shortly after he returned and when she knocked on his door he opened it and fell at. her feet with blood streaming from a deep gash in his throat. His wind pipe was cut. Julius Hoffman resided at 90T Washington avenue. He was u brick layer by occupation and was at one time a leader in the local union. He was eccentric and given to drink, and attracted attention when going along the street by pounding his cane in i lie sidewalk, and because lie was very much stoop shouldered and bow- legged.
