MILLER, County Clerk. Dated at Cairo, 111 ..December 7th, IW.S. New York, Dec. 23 The speculative omniuuity remained convinced today that Important re-alignments are li. progress, or in contemplation, in rail road relations. The first effect of the announced purchases of control of the Colorado and Southern by the liirliiigton had a mixture of misgiv ing and a possible prelude to renew- 1 outbreak of antagonism which fig tired in the Northern securities settlement. That misgiving has passed away, apparently, and the Incident has com.' to be accepted as unmixed encourage ment to speculative enthusiasm. Its Influence was very manifest today, as yesterday, In the continued circu lation of rumors and conjectures In great variety as to possible further mergers and absorptions. The market was spotty at times, owing partly to the reactionary tend ency of some minor stocks which fig ured miwit prominently in the rumors yesterday. It is noticeable thatar tive speculation is in progress in bonds of a class which might be lift ed from a condition of doubtful se curity under the separate control of smaller financial organizations into a lilgner grade ol security witli compan ies in control of powerful corpora- lion of first class credit. It is the enormous transactions in bonds of that class which have swelled the vol ume of the bond market for twrf days past, to almost record proportions The speculative element in these deal ings was plainly manifest iu the vio leu't reactions which occurred today In the prices of some of those which rose most, yesterday's price move ment being unite as wide In some of these cases as Iu shares. At the sain. time the investment demand for firs! class bonds continued excellent, and the ready absorption of new bond is sues as fast as Hiey are ottered con stitutes one o ftlie strong underlying conditions of the present finacial si! nation. As long as this condition Is :.;:::iif'.'st and the call money murk'.t kept free from violent fluctuations. hi re is little influence felt from the mo: i mmediate changes in the mon . y f.ip; ly. Large incursions ar" i : i a 1 in.'.; ti'.l on cash holdings of banks. 1 Today's sub-treasury operations ills closed he wihdrawal of $3,38 1.0'jn ftoni the batiks, undoubtedly due to further payment of subscriptions to Panama bonds. This brings the lots of the banks on this account for the present banking week to $i,L,53,0ii). There is a falling off iu the demand for time loans and unwillingness to pay current asking rates which argues the expectation that easier terms will be procurable after the turn of the year. The market showed no aspect at any time of what Is called holidav PROVISIONS. Fame Is fleet Ing enough In the case of men, hut when it comes lo women the goddess is twice as fickle. Almost any public school pupil more than ten years old cun repeat the names of the presidents of the 1'iilted States, but how many know the presidents' wives? Doubtless 90 per cent, of the adult population Is unable to name off hand more than a half dozen women whoso husbands occupied the While 1 louse. Everybody knows Martha Washing ton was Mrs. Custis when she was married to the Father of Ills Country, but how many remember her maiden name was Dandiidge? There are dozens of families throughout the coun try which, If heraldry obtain in Amer ica, would he entitled to emhhuoii the nation's shield on their coat ofarms by reason of havlug been connected with presidents through their ances tresses. They represent the names of Daudrlds. Custis. Smith, Wayles, Skelton, Payne. Todd, Kortwright, Johnson, Donelsoti, Robards., Hoes, Symtnes, Christian, Gardiner, Chil dress, Powers, Carmlchael, Mcintosh. Appleton, McCardie, Dent, Webb, Ru dolph, Herndon, Folsom, Scott, Lord, Dlmmick, Saxon, Lee and Carow. And those are only nuines of presi dents wives. The mothers of the presidents, beginning with Washing ton's, originally bore the surnames Hull, Hoylsion. Randolph.. Conway, Jones, Smith, Hutchinson, Hoes, lias selt, Armlstead, Knox, Stroller, Mil lard, Hendricks. Speer, Hanks, McDon- ough, Simpson, Hirchard, Ballon, Stone, Neal, Irwin, Allison and Bul lock. Only one woman had the honor of being both the wife and the mother of presidents. She was Abigail Smith, who was married to John Adams, the second president, and whose son, John Qulncy Adams, became the sixth presldeut. Another woman, Eliza beth Hassett, was wife and grand mother of presidents. Her husband was William Henry Harrison, ninth occupant of the White House, her grandson, lieitjamin Harrison, the twenty-third In line. That all the presidents have been dignified men from their early year Is shown by the Christian names their helpmeets. Among the wives the presidents there' never has b(e Flossie, a BiibHte, a Tessle, a Kitty nor even a uweiidoln, Hortense Mabel. The only woman whose given name approached frivolity was Dolly Madison, and she no doubt was chris tened, Dorothy or Dorothea, unless mistake was made at the baptismal font. There were two Marthas am as many Abigails. ( 'amines. Marys Elizas and Julias. The other presidents' wives have een, respectively, Dolly, Louisa Rachel, Hannah, Anna, Letltla Sarah, Margaret, Jane, Lucy, Lucre! la Ellen, Frauceg, Ida, Alice and Edith Equally staid were the names of the presidents' mothers. Ther hafe been two each of Jane, Eliza, Anna and Nancy ; three Marys and four Elizabeths Die other mothers of the presidents dlid the names Susanna, Nelly, A hi gall, Maria. Sarah, Phoebe, Harriet Sophia. Malvlna Hnd Martha. The wife of the first president and the mother of the latest were named Martha. It Is hard to conceive of any of those women being addressed by undignified diminutives. WASHING WITHOUT WATER I I.IU lf)fiilf ; Hid ( Daadrae Ullliuut Herplold.
