THE WORLD'S CRESSET OCT. 7th. 1915 Answer to Mrs. Adam's 1st Qaestion. QUESTIONS NO. 1. Esplee Minn. Sept. 18 1915, Brother Garrett Plpase ex plain this scripture. Luke chap ter 3 verse 16. "'John answered saving unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose, he shall bap with the Holy Ghost and with fire.'' Please tell me how and when mill Wf. he baDttzed with the Holy Ghost and with fire? Martha Adams, Here is a very important que tiun or at least it should be to the christian man or woman, For there is so many different opinions on this point And all of those who differ from each oiher -Eacn of them claim that iliey are right and try to prove it hv the Word of God And we shall say that among the hun ureds that differ, at the most, there could only two be right. For God said thru Ezekiel "'Son of man appoint thee two ways." F'r this reason we said that not more than two could be right. But now. to the point of the Word on this ques tion- Our Text was spoken by j Luke to Theopolis. A man who! at .his time had taken the place of Paul. Paul wa9 now dead, and Luke had spent many days and weeks with Paul in bis mis sion work, as an Apostle to the Gentiles. Therefore Luke Knew the Gos pel that Paul preached to them. And as Luke remained here, after Paul was gone, it become necessary for him to instruct Theopolis in Paul's gospel and in his Acts while here on earth; and part of the Acts of the other Twelve Apostles in connection with Paul. Luke said that John answered and said to all, I indeed bap tize you with water. ' Leaving oct the words "unto repentance which Matthew used, And the reason for the difference 1a this Matthew was talking to the sraelites, and they had some thing to repent for. And Luke was talking to Theopolis for the Gentiles, who bad been brought to the pUce of repentance in Christ's time. And it was for his reason that Matthew used the word YOU. and Luke said all, ' We have used this explanation inorder to let Sister Adams and the Readers of the Cresset know the truth of the Gospels on this Question. And the reason for us speaking in the piural No. of gospels is because there is two spoken of in this language: "But contrariwise when they saw that tbe gospel of the un- circumcision was committed un- me, as the gospel of the cir cu incision was unto Peter: (For he that wrought effectu ally in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, tbe same was miehtv in me toward the Gentiles. And when James, Cephas and John who seemed to be pillars perceivtd tbe grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto tbe heathen! and they unto the circumcision . " (Gal. 279 Here is tbe two gospels spoken of, by Paul. And in answering the question on the Reception of the Holy Ghost Baptism we shall hold up to tbe Readers view, those two Gospels and tbe two Ways, alt thru our auswer; so that we may know when we are or shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost." Luke in giving his gospel said. All" must be baptized with the "3oly Ghost, and fire.' But as we said above Mathew did not say all:" But h6 said "you,"' And now in lead ing on after tbe wa'k of the 12 Apostles, we come up to where they were all assembled with one accord in an upper room on came as a rushing mighty wind and it sat upon them as cloven tongues as of fire, and it tilled tbe whole house. And on this day. they, the Apostles were baptized with tbe Holy Ghost. Then Peter began to preach to tbe Israelites, the gospel of cir cumcision and said unto them. Then .Peter said ucto them, Repent and be baptised, every one of you in tbe name of Jesus Cbiist for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of tbe Holy Ghost.'- (Acts 2-38) You will see here just, how those Israelites would and should -receive the baptism of tbe "Holy Ghost,'' by what Peter said to them. And here is where we learn where Peter used one of i the keys that Christ gave to him, inorder that he might open the door of Faith unto tbe Israelites. But after Peter had opened the door of faith to the Israelites and presented them with tbe gospel of circumcision, so that they could receive the baptism of tbe "Holy Ghost", that is. after they had. by obedience. received the baptism of water for the remission of their sins From these plain facts, it can be seen plainly when and how the Israelites receives the bap tism of the ":Holy Ghost" The next thing to learn, will be, How and when toe Gentiles re ceives tht Baptism held in question? And inorder to find this out we must follow Peter up to the bouse of Cornelious; and see what happened there. After Peter bad gotten there and had come in to the house and began to preach to them. the "Holy Ghost" fell on them, as you can read. "And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning, Then remembered I the word of the Lord, bow that be said, John indeed baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto the day of Penticost. And it Continued to page 7.
