nische Dollarbills gehamstert haben,
oder die jetzt noch von Freunden und
Verwandten in der Neuen Welt mit
amerikanischem Geld unterstützt wer.

home has a water System. If 1t does
not, lt has at least a sink with a drain
which saves carrylng out of doors the
waste water.
In buylng a new sink many factors
are to be taken Into conslderatlon.
Some of them, glven In a Farmers'
Bulletin, "The Farm Kitchen As a
Workshop," follow:
The size of the family, and of the
kltchen, mtist determlne the slze of
tbe sink Installed, but a short sink
with ample table and shelf room near
it may be more convenient than a Iong
sink. Two smaller sinks, one for the
table dlshes near the dlnlng room and
the other for general use In the kitch
en, are very convenient.
With No Squar Corners.
The material of the sink should be
the best avallable, nonabsorbent of
grease as well as molsture, and there
should be no cracks or square corners
to increase the work of keeping lt
clean. A wooden sink and sink spout,
even when they recelve an annual coat
of palnt, will absorb molsture and
grease, which attract Insects, are like
ly to be swarmlng with bacteria, and
to "sour" and have an unpleasant
odor. Even draln hoards of wood are
not recommended unless they have a
waterproof finish of varnlsh, oll, or
paint. If a wooden sink is necessary,
it Is better to have it metal llned, pro
vlded the slioets of metal, which usu
nlly is tin. zinc, gnlvanized iron, cop
ppr, or losjrl, are soldorod where they
are jolned, nnd all parts of the sink,
ineludlnü the tops of the sldes, cov
ered with the metal, so that there Is
no chance for tlie wood to absorb
molsture. Another plan Is to have
a cernent sink bullt into a wooden
fr me ond llned with sheet copper or
tin.
Iron sink of good quallty are su
perior to wooden ones, slnce they do
not absorb groas-e or molsture, and
are durnble. They are kept clean
easlly, if smooth, nnd they will soon
wear smooth, but they have the dls
advnntnge of neither showing dirt nor
proclalmlng thelr cleanllness. Unless
the front is protected by a strlp of
wood the dresses and nprons of tbe
worker are llkely to becorae stnined
with Iron rust.
A soapstone or a slate sink is du
nie. but sometlmes becomes uneven
with wear, and 15 thls hnppens, much
brushlng nnd scrubblng nre required
to remove the snnd and grease that
gather In the riepressions wlien vege
tables are clenned or dlshes washed.
Llke Iron, they do not show whether
they nre clean.
- Some Expensive Sinks.
Knaiueled-iron sinks are smooth,
last well with careful use, and may
be kept clean easily, but they are
more expensive thun Iron. I'orcelaln
sinks nre siniilar to the enameled ones,
but thelr prlce Is almost prohlbitivo.
Pcrhnps the ideal plan would be to
have an ennmeled or porcelaln sink
for the tablewarc in the kltchen or the
pnntry near the dlning room, and an
Iron or soapstone sink for the hoavler
kltchen wäre.
The double sinks. with one basin
for washing ml another for dralnlng
dlshes, nre very convenient, but un
fortunntely they are relatively expen
sive. A smali sink with a rubber Stop
per for Its escape plpe may be used
as a disbpan when two sink are
sed.
The wall behlno the sink should be
covered with some mnterlnl that will
not absorb wnter or grease, and that
Is high enongh to hold the faucets If
there are nny. A solid bnek of the
sniue material as the sink reduces the
number of places which collect dirt
and nttrnct insects. Better than elther
of these. however, I a sink find back

It is Important that the sink stand,

may be a point lower than the drain
where water can settle. Many good
sinks are bullt with a slight slope to
ward the drain. In case water 1

been used, lt may be better to wash
dlshes on tbe table and carry away
the waste water. Openfngs to all pipe
in tubs and sinks should be screened
to prevent clogging of the dralns.
Beware of the Murty Closet
The plumbing must be easy of ac
cess, and therefore, it Is better that,
ther should be no closet under the
sink, llooks or shelves under th sink
or near it will aecommodate every
thing usually kept In tbe dark, oftmi
musty, "sink closet" of older kltchen.
A "sink closet" can be kept sweet and
clean, but it means extra work to d
it. It Is far wlser to have the extra
thlngs In sight and In order than to
have the extra work of keeping the
"sink closet" clean or run the rlsk f

better Just because it is out of sight
If there is a shelf ander the sink (t
should be from 4 to 6 Inches narrow

If possible there should be a wfcde
shelf or drain board on each slde of
the sink on the level with the rfm of
the latter, one to recelve solled dhshes
and the other clean ones. Some bouse
keepers have these covered with zinc,
but, as in all other places where U Is
used, the metal must be neatly fltfed
and closely fastened down so as not
to leave any eh.". nee for loose, rongh
edges, or to provhle breeding planes
for Insects or a lodging place for
grease and dirt. If there is no place
for permanent shelves, sliding or
hinge,! shelves may be used. A right
