Tummanpunainen
Ruusu
Rouvan sydän ei heltynyt,
hän meni lähemmäksi ja
katsoi, mitä Inkeri teki.
Onko tuo jotain pientä
leivosta ollakseen ?... Sehän
haisee siirapille ja on kovin
kirjavaa ... Anni ottaa tä
män moskan ja vie sen Hy
värisen vaimolle, hän saa
paistaa sen lapsilleen. Jos
Inkeri-rouvaa haluttaa aut
taa Lottenia, antakaa hänen
valmistaa hienointa lajia ma
rengeja.
Inkerille nousi karvas pala
kurkkuun ja vesihelmi pyöri
silmänurkissa. Hänen hyvät
mandelipiparnettinsa, joista
Arvo piti kaikista eniten,
vietiin Hyväriseen. Sinne,
jossa vaimo ei muuta tehnyt
kuin kahvia keitti ja möi
viinaa kaikessa salaisuudessa
Hallovan työmiehille.
Ja mitä se seos oli tullut
maksamaan. JVlunankeltuaisia
kymmenen kappaletta, soke
ria, voita, parasta siirappia,
mandeleita ja monia muita
mausteita.
Hän aikoi huutaa:
Älkää viekö sitä sinne
viinapesään, he eivät ymmär
rä sen arvoa, eivätkä sitä
hienoa makua!... Se seos
maksaa yli kymmenen mark
kaa ja Arvo saa hikoilla ko
ko päivän, eikä sittenkään
tulot menoille riitä!... Sta
vangerien ylhäinen suku ei
pysy kauan arvossa, kun sen
ainoa perillinen joutuu puu
tetta kärsimään!
Mutta tätä hän ei uskal
tanut huutaa. Hänen täytyi
niellä karvaat kyyneleet, ja
katsoa, miten vanha rouva
hävitti Hallovan omaisuutta.
Vanha rouva lähti keitti-'
östä ja Inkeri kysyi:
Hyvä Lotten, kuinka
iso aloite laitetaan niitä ma-|
rengeja. Montako munaa ar
velette tarvittavan?
Ainakin kolme-, neljä
kymmentä. Vähemmät eivät
riitä sadalle vieraalle, lu
kuunottamatta omaa väkeä.
Missä ovat munat?...
Hyvä Lotten, tänä aamuna
toin ainakin viisikymmentä
munaa! Eilen toin kolme
kymmentä ja sen edellisenä
päivänä neljäkymmentä ...
Kahdessa korissa oli ainakin
sata munaa... Nyt en löy
tänyt sieltä kuin kaksikym
mentä !...
Hyvä rouva, Hallovassa
ei ole koskaan otettu selvää
siitä, minne joku parikym
mentä munaa joutuu. Tuom
moinen uteleminen on hal
paa poroparvarillisuutta, vas
tasi Lotten halveksivasti ja
meni omille töilleen.
Inkeri punastui. Hän ei o
lisi uskonut, ellei olisi omin
korvin kuullut, että palveli
jat alkoivat ylenkatseellises
ti sinkautella hänelle vasten
silmiä halpamaisia ajatuksi
aan.
Hänestä tuntui, että pal
velijat tekivät vääryyttä ko
ko talon isäntäväelle, eivät
kä yksinomaan hänelle. Sen
vuoksi hän meni vanhalle
rouvalle kertomaan, miten
hänelle oli vastattu, kun mu
nia ei ollut löytynyt.
Inkeri, minä kiellän si
nua sekaantumasta sellaisiin
asioihin... Näin suuressa
kartanossa ei tule kysymyk
seenkään, minne yksi- tai
kaksisataa munaa joutuu ...
Palvelijat ovat voineet antaa
ne köyhille taikka sulhasil
leen.
—Palvelijat antaneet 1...
Onko sitten palvelijoilla lupa
antaa talon tavaraa mielin
määrin kenelle heitä itseään
haluttaa ?
Tuollaisiin pikkumai
suuksiin en ole tottunut...
Pyydän sinua säästämään
korviani noin proosallisilta
asioilta ... Parasta on, että
