Santa Fe. Land Bales in the famous
shallow water belt of Luna county,
around Demlng, will be held on Mon
day, December 8th, by the state land
commissioner, according to notices
sent out by the state land office. The
land Is situated In the Mimbres val
ley, ranging from township 22 to 28
south and ranges 8 to 10 west. Some
of the laud is close to Demlng, and
ranging from this city on the north
clear to the lower end of the valley
next to the Mexican line.
There are 36,076 acres on which a
minimum price of $10 an acre has
been fixed; also one piece of 640 acres
on which there is a house, well, cor
ral, windmill and fencing,, valued at
$250 In addition to the land; also 640
acres on which there Is a well valued
at $200 in addition to the land; also
640 acres on which there is a windmill,
well, tank and corral valued at $225
in addition to $10 an acre for the
land; also a 35-acre tract and a 40
acre tract on which the minimum
price Is fixed at $3 an acre.
This land will be sold on the follow
ing conditions: Each tract will be of
fered separately and sold to the high
est bidder, the land commissioner re
serving the right to reject any or all
bids. Possession will be given on or
before October 1, 1914.
Open War for Fair Railroad Rates.
Albuquerque. .Before Judge C.
Clements of the Interstate commerce
commission here, the New Mexico
state corporation , commission opened
a general attack on the freight rates
now in effect In -New Mexico, reduc
tion of some 30,000 rates being de
manded. The complaint In brief de
mands for New Mexico points on west
bound traffic, from the great lakes,
the Mississippi and the gulf, rates at
least as low as those now in effect to
El Paso, Tex. On westbound traffic
the rate to Colorado common points on
traffic from the' Pacific coast is de
manded. The New Mexico rates are
attacked as in contravention of the
long and short haul clause of tbe Inter
state commerce law.
Wife's Alleged Suitor Slain.
Rosweil. Charles B. Talbert, a
ranch hand of this city, was klUed in
the barroom of a local hotel by Sum
mers F. Marshall, a carpenter. It is
understood the two men had quarreled
over attentions which Marshall al
leged Talbert, a single man, had
shown to Mrs. Marshall. Talbert and
Marshall were seen in each other's
company several times during the
morning. After separating the two
met again In the saloon, and without
a word Marshall opened fire on Tal
bert with a shotgun, killing him In
stantly. Marshall was arrested with
out resistance.
No Sympathetic Strike in New Mexico,
Santa Fe. There seems no likeli
hood of a strike in the coal mines of
New Mexico, according to State Mine
Inspector R. H. Beddow. There has
been some talk of it, he admitted, but
little support had been received for
the idea, and he does not believe It
will be called.
Auditing Board Named.
Santa F6. A board consisting ot
Col. E. C. Abbott, Capt. N. L. King
and Capt. James L. SeHgman, ha
been named by Adjutant General
Harry T. Herring to audit the books
of the late Adjutant General A. S.
Brookes, preparatory to turning them
over to the new appointee.
Soldiers Pursue Navajo Indians.
Shlprock. Major McLaughlin of the
Indian Service, Superintendent Shel
ton ot the Navajo agency here, and
the Indian police force, left here to
meet General Scott and the Twelfth
cavalry from Fort Robinson, Neb.,
sent here to arrest the Navajo medi
cine men and renegades near Beau
tiful Mountain. The Indian's have been
fortified there for ten days, refusing
to surrender Beven of their number
wanted on federal court . warrants
charging bigamy, larceny and assault.
Doubt was expressed here as to
whether the Indians are still on Beau
tiful mountain, and it will be no sur
prise to local officials if the Indians
have withdrawn across the San Juan
or Colorado river to the Henry moun
tains or fled to their kinsmen, the
Plutes, in San Juan county, Utah.

R. P. Donohoo, receiver for the de
funct First State Bank of Tucumcarl,
has brought suit against the Las
Cruces State Bank for $17,949.
James T. Fay of Farmlngton was
found guilty on the charge of attempt
ing to defraud the government of tho
tax on two gallons of fruit brandy.

Govenor McDonald as follows: Ar
thur Daune Tyler, Demlng; Lee O.
Lester, Demlng; Thomas W. Hanna,
Lamy.
The beet harvest is now in full
swing and four carloads of beets a
day are being sent from Maxwell to
the sugar factory at Garden City,
Kansas.
Anecleto Contreras, an old citizen
of Rio del Media, committed suicide
by blowing off tbe top of his head
with a muzzle loading gun loaded witu
buckshot.
Fred Burleson, 20-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Burleson, of Lin
coln, was shot in Carrizozo and may
die. Al Hlghflll, his assailant, la in.
the county jail.
.Good progress is being made on the
tracklaying on the branch line of rail
road Into the Burro mountains and It
is expected that the track will be into
Tyrone in a short time. .
Thieves have been at work recently
at Vaughn, among other things carry
ing off about 3,000 pounds ot beans
that B. F. Little" had stored in the
Tharp ranch house.
The Tres Rltos Cattle and Land
Company filed Incorporation papers
with the state corporation commis
sion. Tho headquarters of the com
pany are at Three Rivers.
The convict camp which has been
working on the Santa Fe-Las .Vegas
road is now repairing the road about
ten miles beyond Glorleta, according
to State Engineer French. '

Duke Chester, formerly an inmate in
the New Mexico penitentiary, where
he served a term for grand larceny,
committed . in Bernalillo county, is
under Brest in Denver for making
and having in his possession a plaster
mold for a $1.00 coin.
The county superintendent of Rio
Arriba county has . filed his report of
the present term with the state educa
tional department. This shows a
school population 'of 5,655, 63 teachers
employed, an average monthly salary
of $53.57, an average school term of
5.48 months, and a total monthly pay
roll of $3,375.
For the past month a day has not
passed during which from six to fif
teen carloads of Colfax county sugar
beets have not passed through Raton
en route to the refineries in western
Kansas.
Deputy Traveling Auditor E. A.
Mossman has completed his audit of
the books of McKlnley county and la
now at Los Lunas, where he will re
port the books of the officials of that
county.
Up to last week twenty-six bodies
remained burled in the Stag coal mine
No. 2 at Dawson, though a month had
passed since the disaster which car
ried death to 263 of the 284 men at
work at the time ot the explosion. It
is thought that many weeks will pass
before the last body is recovered.
A committee named by the state
board ot education to report on a Span
ish text book for the use ot the state
schools, consisting of. Filadelfo Baca,
assistant superintendent of public In
struction; Antonio Lucero, secretary
of state, and Bonifacio Montoya, coun
ty, superintendent of Sandoval county,
met during tbe teachers' meeting at
Albuquerque.

To Make Cloth Waterproof.
Take eight ounces of sugar of Jead,
eight ounces of powdered alum and
two and one-half gallons of lukewarm
water. Mix in a tub and let stand for
twenty-four hours. Stir thoroughly
