These rains were not heavy at Kenna, prob ably three quarters to an inch during the afternoon and night, getting lighter as you go north and west, but much heavier in the country south of the rail road. In the neighborhood of Big Valley, Valley View, Scotts Ranch and Rock Valley it was Tery heavy. Estimates vary from 3 to 0 inches, some hail in places. Lukes and water holes in that territory full to over, llowing. These rains a;e too late in most places for the farm crops, most of which in this part are too far gone for redem ption. However the moisture is in good time for the ranges, a3 fall and winter grass is now assured in territories covered by tl)9 heavier rains. Hut there are many pastures in '20 miles of this place which are yet short of the necessary moisture for good grass. LATER Good rains fell at Kenna and vicinity Wednesday night. Probably an inch or more. These rains seem to have been general over a large scope of the country, this Weeks Rains (ItoMTell Evening News) Assessor D. W, Pat ton of Lea county came in from his home near King today. He reports that there was a fine rain last n'ght extending from Tatum to the L, E. Pasture Also from ea t of Cjmanche to a point this side of the Pecos river. Ernest Carper is in from the Prager Miller ranch near the Halfway House and reports another tine rain which fell in that country last Sunday night. Dick deGraftenreid received a telegram from his ranch fore man this morning conveying the welcome news that they had a fine. rain on his ranch near Buchanan Sunday night and that all tanks and lakes were filled to overflowing. F. L. Yerw reports a good rain on the Oasis ranch last night. This is the second f ill of the much needful within the last few days. Mr. Yeaw thinks that the plains east of Roswell received a good wetting last night. Dr. J. II. Jenkins leturned today from a general inspecting trip to Ft. Sumner and Vaughn. He reports havy rains over all that countiy extending out this way to tiie half way hOutc and north to Turjtimcatl. Temple Houston Cato has en listed in the Aviation Corps and his brother, James W.lias pass ed a successful examination under the selective drafr. This takes two to the colors from tho Cato Bros. Ranch. Gus Fernstrum has also en listtd in the Aviation Corps. The Record wishes these three young men well, and predicts that they will be a credit to the service in whatever capacity ihey may be 'called upon to do their bit.- A. Fishing was good. This is a good time to do some street work in Kenna. C. II. Wear is placing some houses in Kenna for rent this winter. Mrs. Lois Curry is making some needed improvements on her home here. A new auto bridge across town creek on main street has just been built. J. W. Taylor and family of New Hope, pas.-ted through Ken no Wednesday en route to Ros well. Mrs. Georgn T. Littlefield is cruite ill this week and was car ried to Roswell Thursday for tuedical ireatmenj. P. E. McCarter of Boaz, was a business visitor in Kenna Thursday morning between trains. He reports good rains on his ranch and says that he will make a good lot of feed. W. A. Stanself, Piabate Judge of Lea Co., left Monday for his home in Lovington, aft er a few days spent here on the ranch branding calves and otherwise shaping up his busi nesg here. James W. Cato left Monday to visit his mother at Fredrick, Oklahoma, before going into training with the American army. i VALLEY VIEW John Manges and family, Bud Ward and family, Mrs. Mollie Ward and daughter Ella, were visitors of W. C. Bussey and family, Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Will McOalley left for Plainview, Texas, Aug. Sth. A fine rain fell Sunday after noon, which was gladly received by everyone. Mrs. Jess Hathcock was struck by lightning Sunday during the rain. But we hope it will not prove serious. The wind which accompanied the rain Sunday turned R. W. Smith's house up-side down, but no one was hurt as the house ia unoccupied. Mrs. Henry Carroll and chil dren of Elida are visiting rela tives and friends of this com munity. George and Lee Smith made a trip to Roswell Wednesday and returned Friday, bringing with them some fine large fresh apples. E. L. McBryde and wife came out to their ranch from Elida Sunday to attend the round up. The Directors of the Kenna school are just now in receipt of official advice from county School Superintendent Sam J. Stinnett, that the County Board t-f Education has granted Ken na a third teacher and authoriz ing them to employ the teacher and prepare the extra room needed. The directors are ar ranging to build another room to the present two room school house, work beginning at once, which will be pushed as fast as possible in view of opening school on schedule time. The lime for doing this work is short, but a little push and pep will get a comfortable room ready by the time school should start. BOAZ NEWS Mrs. A. L. Ballard and two children from Hamilton, Texap, an- here 'visiting her mother, Mrs. Mu'rdoik. Mrs. Grant Newlin and Mrs. Wm. Ilorner and two children returned last week from a five week visit in iowa.
