It was brought to Carlsbad in iftog and set up under the super vision of Dirk Kule who came with it from I.I I'a so where it had been used for years, but where it origi nated is impossible to learn, L. 0. Kullen, the present district at torney pulled the big lever for years while working on the Argit and said the old standby got better with age. Col. Griffin through the intercession of his friend Mr. W. G. Woerner and his old standby J. H. lames finally got bis hands on the mat bine and started the list of pa pers he conducted in Carlsbad. I'luall) James sold the press to Mulltiiie who started the New Mex iio Sun with it, holding much mute i dpid presses a good race, linully selling it to the Colonel who says it Ih better than ever now. Attention is called to the pro fessional caid of Lawyer D. G. Grantham who has a tine suit of rooms the second door north of the Masonic Building and will be found o hand at all times to attend to attend to business. Mr. Grantham came here three and a half years ago from Corsicana, Teias, and by hard woik and close attention to business has built up a Urge and constantly increasing business and has puichaped a tint home on Greene's Highlands and la identi fied in the prosperity of the coun try. Of all the acquaintances wade by Mr. Grantham since com ing here he la pioud that all are his friends and he has been more than successful in hli business ever having dabbled in u.ijr side Issues such as real estate or other lines, but confined himself strictly to the law with the result that he is known as a perfectly reliable lawyer in the mnny branches nec essary U .his country. The New York World is so in discreet as to say that Roosevelt la demagog ut and and liar and then gees on to say as follows: "No other living- man ha ever so SroMly lllw-lled tin 1 tilted Stau-a a nee thU president, who b-aniin-hp eoiigrr, IiuIIiIiism juiliiM, twtib trio intetrrity of court, laiului prtvat nutans ami who has shown himavlf the most rrklea, unscrupulous trina (gua hni U Aniwru-an people ever tnutad rita great power and author ity " Mew If Mr. Pulltier wat living i Now Is The Time. j I Til"1 1 í 1 1 now Ik fiir coiiKrt'ss i I fur tlit mlmiss on f New Mex- i(!o to Htath.:xl provides that! th I'nitfii Staffs Kovprnrwnt j .shall loríate tu th; new nta! ! umontf other things, two million acre, of the best public lunU within the preñen t territorial limit, to In ihI by sale or loa, for the payment of all th ter ritorial, county, ami municipal lelitn, of New Mexii'o existing i at the time of the pasaRt of the act. It is possible, ami many well in formed persoriH regard it as en tirely probable, that this bill will pass at the present nhort sension of congress. The republican national platform pledges the party to the admission of the two remaining continental territories withot delay, the president is earnestly in favor of it, and the president-elect is eipiully friend ly to the proposition, ami is de sirous of bavin the (uestion disosei of and out of the way before he takes office, hence those w ho believe the hill will be passed at the present ehort ses sion are not without what would seem gdiil foundation for such opinion. Now, ai-coriiinu; to the terms of the pendinK bill, if an issue of bonds for the construction of a newer system for the city of AHtU(uercue can be elfected be fore the passage of the said bill, the money to pay the bonds will come from the two million acres land donation which the general government will give the new state for just such purjHises, and not a dollar of the burden w ill fall upon the people of the town, ,of this or any other generation, I while, on the other hand, if we j continue to fool away our time I wrangling over the difference I between tweedlee and tweedle idutn, and fail to get the sewir ! bunds issued till after tne state j hood bill becomes a law, we will .cut ourselves off from all lot or (part in the generosity of the fed- i . erai government so tar as con concerns the sewer bond issue, and have to lear uMn our own shoulders the whole of that bur den of three hundred thousand dollars, more or less. December If), 1908. Editor of the Current and Argus: City. Dear sirs: The enclosed editorial clipuing from the Albuquerque Journal of the 18th instant would seem i to apply with equal force to Carlsbad where some of our tim id fellow citizens have leen re luctant to bank enough upon the future of Carlsbad to support an issue of bonds to build our badly needed sewer system. Carlsbad's location, resources and climate entitle it to become the ideal home town and health resort of the Southwest. The Ust of sanitary conditions are requisite to make a health 1 resort or a jpnh! home town and with the i test water system in' the territory and an opportunity to have a first class sewer sys tem at moderate cost it seems t many a reflection Ukii their en terprise, public spirit and confi dence in the future of their town that our citizens have not long since come together upon thia proposition and built the aewer. Surely our families are; entitled to the best protection we can give them, even at the rink of some tirmnei d sacrifice. If the ftt'itehood bill should pass with the provision for pay ment of territorial, ounty and municipal debts mentioned by th" Albiiiii'rq je Journal, as in deed seems likely, we will have oirselves to thank if our more progressive neighbors have loth their improvements and no debt, while we will have no further hope of obtaining ours without tlel.t. Irt us get together while com petent contractors are close at hand with a first class plant at Koswell. put in our sewer and put it in right. If it is indeed too late to ob tain the benefits of the state hood bill it will be only another illustration of the familiar adage "The (oda help those who help themselves" which we all of us iisy in daily life; but whosi ap plication seems sometime to be lost w hen we try to act as a community. Francis G. Tracy. The Hoard of County Commis sioners will organize with two new members the coming year. It is with pleasure that we note the disposition on the part of the Hoard to improve the roads throughout the county. All the Commissioners seem to be in hearty sympathy with the move ment of making roads that are creditable to this pragressive community. The time is long past when any old trail through the brush can be considered a road. The coming of the auto mobile also gives impetus to road improvement. FinlayPratt Hdwe. Co. E. T. CARTER, Field Manager, Headquarter: Hotel Schlitx, Carlsbad. New Mex. The question of tree planting is beginning to receive the at tention it deserves. Several car loads of trees have been ordered for the Iiving country, while others are still at work on preparing orders for what they wish to plant. The matter of shade trees, however, is not re ceiving the attention that it de serves. Nothing improves the appearance of the country like trees. Carlsbad is rightly styled "The Heautiful" on account of its magnificent trees. A farm with a few trr-s on it is worth more than where the land is ab solutely bare. U.S. Market.
