Too Much Business.
Tuebk are some men, whom people
term enterprising, who arc continual
ly adding anew undertaking to their
present business not of a similar na
ture, such that it might bo called a
branch of their avowed avocation,
but of a kind entirely unknown to them
in detail, and of which they can only
aee the favorable side, which is prom
inently displayed in bas relief by the
party who leads them on to make the
investment. They are never eatisfied
to have a handsome bank account or
to allow their surplus to remain in
government securities or some other
equally sure collateral. We have
known such men who had the idea
that they were endowed with so much
, uperior executive ability and keen
observing powers to control their sub
ordinates, that they could conduct
four different business establishments
or institutions as well as the ordinary
man could manage one. They would
keep a shoe store, run a livery stable,
own a hotel, restaurant, bar and hack
line, furnish the money to start a
newspaper, be deacon in the church,
regular at prayer meetings and run a

in our short life, we can not call
to mind a single one, who

Look at Ralston, of California,
&nd Fairchiid. They became
so full ot busiues9 of so diverse na
tures that it crushed them. Look at
Wm. 11. Cushman. who was four
years híío the uabob of Georgetown,
and central Colorado; loader in every
gigantic undertaking banker and
merchant. He fled the country to es
cape his victims and only last month,
while we were in Deuver he was be
ing brought to justice irom New
York where he luid been captured by
a detective.
We may prehaps look at a man who
is now nnpcratiug largely in Colora
do in much such a way as Cushman
did: his name is that of a public man
aud we mav BDcak of him. We refer
to J. M. Haverly. We arc willing to
ffoon record as prophesying that he
will be swallowed up by his enter-
nrises before a great while has elapsed
He is perfectly sound financially, as
far as has ever been heard of, at thiB
time: he ia the most successful theat
rical manager of the day, but how can
he master the numerous enterprises,
including mining and newspaper pub
lishing in Colorado, which are enu
merated in his advertisements on the
railway guides and in other places?
The niau who attains a great for
tune in the pursuit of half a dozen
kiads of business, each lorcigu to the
other is yet to be heard of, and his
history recorded. Neither Astor,
Stewart, Raymond. Dennett nor the
Rothschilds did it.
The first train of cars ever run west
of the Mississippi river in Iowa was
sent out twenty-five years ago, Aug
ust 24th. on the Mississippi and Mis-!
souri Railroad, now part of the Chi
cago, Rock Island and Tacific Road.
To-day Iowa has nearly five thousauu
miles of railroad in operation, and is
the fifth State in the point of rrfiloage
in the Union.
