in Old South Uurch. Ranking next
to Chicago, and boasting a population
of 303,9.18, Boston litis atmndant cause
for pride in its prosperity. The strides
of progress the New England metrop
olis is now making are shown by the
fact that during the first two cen
turies of its existanco Boston
achieved little of its greatnes,
and in 1800 had reached a
population, of only 24,S37. If the city
grows during the next lift y years as it
1m during ihe last, its commercial
power and its influence as an intellec
tual centre will keep pace with the
growth of the nation. Haying under
taken the chief part in the great en
terprise of shortening Boston's water
communication with the metropolis
some ninety miles by constructing the
Cape Cod Canal, New York will glad
ly participate in the grand fete of to
morrow, and Brooklyn will also be re
presented in the demonstrations. In
the procession six ini'cs long, the
Thirteenth, the Twenty-third and the
Sixty-ninth regiments will be conspi
cuous, and the figure of Chaplain Hen
ry Ward Bcechcr as an equestrian
Will perhaps bo the most notablo of
the wholo pageant. Should the
weather ba'as tine as to-day, the fete
will doubtless bo one of the most
magnificent demonstrations ever wit
nessed on this continent outside of
