She must get, up before day break on the cold, raw nioruhiiis of midwinter to take her dancing lesson ; and again at midnight, when the opera is over, she has to find her way on foot through snow and rain to her humble lodging at Moutmartre or Iiaiiguolles. The idea of riding in an omnibus mustuot cuter head; for while in the lowest rank of her calling she has but a franc at night, and even when grown-up and promoted to-the second quadrille, she earns only 700 francs a year, or $140. Of such stern material are our entertainments made ; and in no de partment of public amusement, is a more rigid economy practiced than in the salaries of dancers, advance ment comes very slowly, and there is a great deal of competition for every vacancy in (he higher ranks of the profession. Even after the most mer itorious and indefatigable labors the native French girl constantly finds herself eclipsed by Russian and Ital ian dancers. The hierarchy of the dancing world is us narrow and as rigorous as the hierarchy of tho army. It bristles with examinations, compet itive struggles, and inspections. It is considered a great thing to move up from the "second quadrille" to the "first quadrille,'' for then the salary is raised to 1,000 francs, or $200 yearly, being just enough, with frugal management, to keep body and soul together. From the " first quadrille' to the second "eorpliccs" is a still more vigorous step forward, and is rewarded with 1300 fraucs a year, or say just 1 a week. The next step upward is to the envied position of "premier coryphee;" possessing the superb emoluments of 10000 francs or G0 a year. Finally, after years and years of patient study, the dancing- girl attains the summit of her ambi tion, and rises into a "petit sujet," which gives her an individuality be fore the iootlights. This giddy height of glory and pay amounting to 1000 francs, or, in exceptional cases to 2000 francs a year, is the largest re ward that dancing genius can expect under ordinary circumstance s, for t: c Elssers and Tagliouis form a :hiss apart. Here and no further can a good dancing girl go, after a blame less youth passed in diligent capers, at rehearsals and in public. Happily, there arc prizes even in this queer lit tle lottery. M, llalevy was one ev ening seated in the private room of the late Nestor Iioqueplan, who was then director of the opera in Paris. Koqueplau was carelessly turing over some old papers, when he came upon a list of the ballot girls of 1838. On reading it carefully through they found that several of them had gone into the choruses of the Opera Com ique, one let furnished lodgings at Montmarlro, another liad married a stock-broker, a third was the wife of a comic actor. But the last two names which had been written on the faded yellow paper in 1838 belonged, the one to an English peeress, and the other to a rich mercer at Dijon. Mr. P. M. Jones desires to an nounce to the public that ho is now able to accommodate a lew boarders at reasonable rates, at the Las Vegas Bakery, South Second street near the plaza. 5G-2t. "Wanted.
