HERBERT & CO I DRUGS, MEDICINES. TOILET ARTICLES, AND PERFUMERY. At the present timo there are only two women in the United States not able for first-class enrruviug on fctecl. These art Mis bartain, daughter of Jnhn Sartain, Chief of the An De partment of the Centennial Exhibi tion, and Mrs. Wormley of Columbus Ohio. Miss start niu has the good fort une to be educated under her accom plished father, whose task of engrav ing Uothermel's latest picture, the "Battle of Gettysburg," she lately re lumed from Europe to assume apart, that he might accept the houorable appoiutmcnt offered him. Mrs. Wormley, who first became expert in drawing, devoted herself to the illus tration of a large work which her hus band, a distinguished chemist, wrote on crystals. After she had finished they were sent to some Eastern city to be' engraved. A difficulty arose, no engraver could be found willing to undertake the microscopic work re quired. It was the opinion of en gravers who were consulted that only the artist who drew the pictures could engrave them. Thus compelled to finish the work, the wife of Doctor Wormley learned the nrt of engraving engraved the plates and enjoys the honor of having contributed so large iy to the beauty and completeness of a celebrated scientific treatise. The work in progress ot the wood-carving school in Cincinnati, under the direc tion of Mrs. ritman, has been highly praised, and will bo a unique contri bution to the Woman's Department from Ohio. Xever in the past twenty years has there been such a scarcity of girls for general housework in North Adams, Mass., as at the present time. The lo cal intelligence bureau is overrun with applications for domestics, and is unable 1o supply the demand. The highest wages are offered. This is in a great measure owing to the mills and shoe shops taking oil' the best girls, who prefer factory work to general housework, because of the larger wages they are enabled to earn. In Sampson's shoe shop there are girls who average $10 per month, and in some ot the other shops they can do equally as well. I'ittsiicld is similar ly t ronbktl. and in this hitter town some of the women who work in the silk factory on piece-work earn as high as $1;") to $20 per week. In fact, at the present, time women there can earn more than men, ami are in great er demand, though manual labor is worth $1.28 per day this season, against one dollar last year. Ex change. . . .
