A young fop in compauy with
some belles of lashiou, was riding iuto
the country a pleasuring, wheu they
saw a rustic looking country lad at
work by by the roadside, Thinking
it a fine opportunity to show his wit
to the damsels, by sporting with the
poor boy's ignorance, he accosted
hi in :
"Can you inform mo Mr Zcbidce,
how far it is to where I am going,
and which is the most direct road ?"
Poor Zebby, uot the least daunted,
bin with the- most sober and composed
' face, said :
''If you are going to the gallows it
is but a short distance ; if to jail, it
tauds but a few rods this side ; but if
only to poverty and disgrace, you aro
uow approaching your journey's eud;
and as the most direct road to either,
you nre now iu it, nnd cannot mls
the way." The dandy dropped Lin
