AN ACT Providing for the regis tration of voters of the Territory of Xew Mexico. it enacted hy the Lysluie A"n' Lly if tie Territory of Xeic J' "' co: Sjkc. 1. Tliat hereafter it shall not be lawful lor any person to vote in the Territory unless his name shall have been registered as a voter as hereinafter provided. Sec. 2. It shall be the duty of the judges of probate of the counties of this Territory respectively, thirty days prior to any election or any elec tion for members of tho Legislature of this Territory, to appoiut throe competent persons, at least one of whom shall belong to the political party opposed ;o that of the prefect, to constitute a board of registration, in and for each precinct of the coun ty. Sec. ii. It shall be the duty of the said board of registration to inquire into, ascertain and make a record ol the names of all persons legally quali fied to vote under the election laws of this Territory, in the election im mediately subsequent, for all officers to be elected at said election; provid ed the qualifications of a legal voter shall bo as follows! he shall be a, citi zens of the United States of the age of twenty-one years, shall have re sided in the Territory six months, in the county w herein he offers to vote three months, and in the precinct thirty days immediately preceding the election; and one of tho members of the board of registration, to be se lected by themselves, shall be the sec retary thereof; and the secretary so selected shall have authority to ad minister oaths to the persons apply" ing to be registered when so directed by any member of t lie board of regis tration. Six'. 4. it shall be tho duty of the said board of registration not exceed ing fifteen days prior to any such elec tion as hereinbefore mentioned, to as semble at the most central and con venient place of each precinct ot the respective cjunties of tlds Territory, which place shall be designated by thejudgc of probate at the time appointing said board, which designa tion shall serve as notice to the said board ot registration; the board of registration shall then make a lull and complete list of of all the' legally qual ilicd voters of their respective pre cincts, the names of whom ahall be written in the list of voters olphabet ically; and it shall be the duty of the said boards of registration to make three correct copies of the list of vot ers of their precincts, one of which copies shall be furnished to the judges of election on or before the day of the election that shall be held next after the forming of the list, and the two copies shall be furnished to the judge ot probate of the county, whose duty it shall be to tile one copy of such list and transmit one copy of the 6ame to the Secretary of the Ter ritory, who shall file the same in his oliice for preservation and reference In an amendatory act thereto, ap proved Feb. 4, 18G9, it is provided in Sec. 2. It shall be the duty of the board of registration to make out in their respective precincts, the list of the legal voters, and these shall not be required to be present to be register ed. It shall be the duty of the board of registration to place in one of the most public places, a copy of the list of the legal voters of their respective precincts for the information of the pcople,aud said copy shall be exposed as aforesaid ten days before any elec tion. About noon yesterday a party of adventurers patted from the east town with a two horse team, being thoroughly equipped lor an extended prospecting trip in the lower country. They carried a small forge and must have liad several hundred dollars worth, of general mershandise in the outfit. Franco Chavez is the best informed man in local politics, and general literature aud history, in the Rio Grande valley. Sunday morning's Gazette was complimented by intelligent strangers at the St. Nicholas, as a remarkably good paper for this altitude. Hon. M. A. Otero ha completed his southern canvass and is expected here to attend the Democratic county convention to-morrow. Mrs. Mitchell and her children go to San Marcial to-day; they have been at the S umncr house and would have departed yesterday, but forthe6torm. Tho patent medicine men afford ed no little amusement to the passers by on Saturday night, snowedup now though. A copy of the incorporation pa pers for tho new hotel has been re turned and filed iu the clerks office. This is now a corporation ready to make contracts, sue and be sued.
