Socially, politically, and religiously
t he civilized world is hi a terribly un
settled condition. Everything ap
pears to be m a condition of unrest.
There seems to bo no well stated lim
it to anything.
If you i-tick your linger into the
water and take it out, it is in yaiu to
look for the hole, and equally so 3 it
to suppose, whatever space you occu
py, that, the world will miss you
when you die.
It is neither safe, respectable nor
wise to bring any youth to manhood
without a regular culling. Industry,
like idleness, is u matter ot habit. No
idle boy will make an active and in
dustrious and useful man.
The best rule to forma young man's
character, are to talk little, to' hear
much, to rellect uloue upon what has
passed in company, to distrust one's
own opinion, and value others Unit
doerve it.
A man may denounce infidelity In
a spirit which in itself is essentially
infidel. David Iliune once said to
such a person, "You hope I shall he
damned for want of faith, and 1 fear
you will sufler the same fate for want
of charity."
The noblest part of a friend is an

aiming at my good, I must think him
