Count Him Out.
Chicago, Illinois, November 6 - It
hss been learned here through priv
ate sources that extraordinary efforts
arc being made in the eighth Ala
bama district 'o count out Lowe, the
Pepublican-Grcenbacker elected, and
count in General Wheeler, the straight
Democrat. The Democrats are stim
ulated in this gaine by Ihe knowledge
(hat the House will be vcy close and
possibly change the remit. It is also
known that Lowe will act with the
Republicans in organizing the House,
hence the desperate attempt to over
conic his tweney-fiva majority. The
way they are doing it is as follows:
When the franchise was first conferred
on the blacks on the Republican tickets
were printed the picture of an eagle
or a flag on top in o-der that the ig
norant blacks might know their tick
et. To prevent this the Democratic
legislature passed a law saying that
tickets should have no figure or de
vice upon them, meaning no pictures
such as eagles or flags. In the two
lower districts instead of Roman
characters were printed VIII. Noth
ing could be so ridiculous, yet upon
this flimsy pretext it is proposed to
deny Lowe an election certificate and
give it to Wheeler so be will partici
pate in the organization of the House,
Wheeler was a Lieutenant-General in
the Confederate army, being the
youngest man who attained that rank
in their army during the war.
Due to Fraud.
New York, November 6. At a
meeting at Tammany Hall of the
general commit lee last night an ad
dress to the Democrats of thecoitutry
was reail claiming that Hancock's de
feat was duo to fraud, intimidation
and the use of enormous sums of
money by the Republicans. The ad
dress concludes as follows: "The
rage and frenzy of the hour will pass
away aud the sober judgment of the
American people will reassert its
sway with the Democratic party
with cleaa bauds on which alone will
be borne aloft the ark of our political
covenant aud Ave can preseut our
selves once more for the sulferages of
the people ; though defeated we will
yet attain to assured victory. One of
the wisest men who ever lived said :
'None can aspire to act greatly but
those who are of force great lv to suf
fer.' "
Mail Matters.
New York. Nov. C The fat Aus
tralian mails which arrived at San
Francisco Oct, 5th. and forwarded by
special train arriving here Oct.l2llu
reached Queenstown on the 20th; they
were, however, detained at Queens
town twelve hours, for some reason
at present uukuown, therefore failed
of delivery in London until the 22d.
Had the British pojtal authorities dis
played the same energy that marked
the conduct of the postmaster here,
the merchants of London, and other
large cities of England aud the con
tinent, would have received their let
ters in twelve hours less time than
thostvconveyed by steamship from
Ansfrftiia via. Italy, which left Sidney
September 5th, and arrived in Lon
don October 18th.
Arrested.
Chicago, Illinois, November 6.
Two men were arrested here to-day
with fifteen i.undred bogus itilroad
tickets on their persons, must of them
being issued o rthc Canada .)ti th
orn, Michigan Central. Lake .'ior
Chicago & A lion, Missouri Pacific
and Unun Pacific to Denver. A full
6Ct of stamps, dies, etc., were found.
Sonic of the tickets were worked oil'
on the scalpers here at cheap rates.
The men give their names as Miller
and Station!. The latter claims to
have been used as a cat's paw. Miller
has a score of alliases.
Bernhardt Objects.
New York, November C Sarah
Bernhardt yesterdav sent Collector
Mcrritt a formal protest in regard to
duties by the custom authorities up
on wearing apparel and personal ef
fects. She claims that the articles
were entitled tobo admitted duty free
as much as they were to be classed as
implements of her profession which
the law exempts from tax. A formal
appeal to the secretary of the treasury
was also enclosed. The private view
of her paintings and sculptures ap
pointed for this evening is postponed
one week.
Convicted.
Washington, November G. Postmaster-General
Maynard to-day re
ceived a private letter from Constan
tinople bearing information that ar
guments have been delivered in the
Ottoman criminal court in the case of
the three men implicated in the mur
der of Iiev. Mr. Pa s, the Ameri
can missionary. actual perpe
trator of the deed v, condemned to
death and the other two tu fifteen
years imprisonment with hard labor.
13 to Be a Candidate.
Philadelphia, Nov. 6. A special an
nouncement in the American, a
weekly poliitcal journal of this' city,
points to a remarkable editorial in is
sue on the Grant campaign. The val
ue of the article arises out of the fact
that Wharton Barker, the proprietor
of the American, is on terms of close
intimacy with Garfield, and when he
predicts that the president elect will
be his own candidate for re-election
it is pretty sure t hat he speaks on pos
itive information.
Their Say.
Columbus, S. C. November G. The
Daily Register to-day in its leading
editorial says : Now wit h Garfield in
the Presidential chair, and for whom
the Republicans have claimed so much
in the way of ability and statesman
ship we shall see what we shall see
One thing is certain, if he is half
the man he is claimed to be. if he is
only half the statesman in the true
sense of the word, ho will hold his
own and be his own successor in 1881.
Congratulations.
Philadelphia, November 6. The
Herald's Cleveland special says Gar
field received 75 mo;e congratulatory
telegrams to-day, making about 900
in all. Every mail brings huge pack
ages of letters of similar import.
Those letters that require answering
receive immediate attention, the Gen
eral being just as prompt in his cor
respondence since his election as he
was b fore it.
Eowell Victorious.
Loudon, Novi tnbe- 9. The contest
finished at 10:20 to-night with the fol
lowing score: Uowell 5GG miles; Lit
llewood, 170; Dobler, 450; Unwell heal
Frank Hart's record of 5G5 miles, at
10:10 this forenoon amid great excite
ment aud cheering. About 8,000 per
sons were present. The receipts for
the week are estimated at !jl,200.
Wool.
Philadelphia, Pa., November G.
The wool market is improved both
in price and deinanl. New Mexico
and Colorado fine is hringing.18 to 28,
medium 28 to 32, coarse 20 to 23.
Boston, Mass, November 6. Wool
is active aud the price advanced. Up
wards of 211,000,000 pound have
been disposed of during the week.
Voted the Republican Ticket.
An Inter Ocean's Washington spec
ial reports from Chattanooga that ex-Postinuster-Gencral
Key voted the
Republican ticket at the recent elec
tion. The fact is Key has been little
less than a Republican since the war
closed aud his voting the straight Re
publican ticket occasions no surprise.
Thrown Out.
IVicksburg, Miss., November 6.
The election commissioners of Warren
count', composed of two Democrats
and one Iiepublicau threw out 2059
Garfield tickets, and 2091 for Linch,
the Republican candidate for C in
gress, on the ground that they were
not in the legal form under the law of
Mississippi.
Close.
Whe ling, November 6. - The
con
tent in this congressional district be
tween Wilson, democrat, and Hutch
inson, republican, is so close that the
hitters election' was at one time iu
doubt, but to-day it is confidently
claimed and it seems from the latest
return j that Wilson has ubout sixty
t wo majority.
Hughes' Beception.
New York, November 6. Over 3,
000 people assembled at the Cooper
Institute last night at the public re
ception given IIou. TIios. Hu-hes.
George William Curtis presided and
delivered the address of welcome, lie
was followed by Mr. Hughes, who
read a paper on "Co-operation."

St. Petersburg, Nov. 6,--The great
trial of Midlists including six persons
accused of being authors of the ex
plosion on the Moscow railway, and
in the Winter Palace, aud others
charged with plotting against the life
of the Czar, has begun before the
military tribunal.
A Great Victory
The In'cr Ocean's Nashville special
says the Tennessee .Republicans won
a great victory in electing the gover
nor, a congressman and forty-seven
legislators. The state credit men are
in the ascendency aud the- session bo
ginning in Januery will be a stormy
one.

Since the days when the elder Dar
win first drew attention to the hypo
thesis of Rnffon and Hclvrtii.s, that
man arose from a race of monkeys in
habiting the borders of the Mediter
ranean, who learned by accident to
use the muscle of the thumb, a keen
interest has naturally been taken by
all classes of mankind in the manners
and custoin-i of their possible rela
tions. In the last volume of the -'Proceedings
of Ihe American Associa
tion Mr. W. T. II ornad ay gives some
curious and valuable information con
cerning the nature and habits of the
orang-outang Some of the informa
tion, indeed, is remarkably curious, as
for instance, that the orang always
builds his nest In the tops of trees,
and always low down; while his fa
vorite attitude for slumber ié to lie
proe upon his back, a position which
the translated ingenuity of man could
hardly hope to achieve. These state
ments are so very remarkable that oí e
is almost tempted to suppose Mr,
Ilornaday an Irishman rather titan
au American. It is only fair, howev
er, to him to say that I have taken
his valuable remarks at secondhand
from the Times, and that paper, as we
know, has its own peculiar way of
imparting information. London
