he settled down to some honest em
ployment, or else return to Kansas
City where he would no doubt be
better appreciated than he is here.
Is it not about time thai some step
were taken to form a lire company?
We have no doubt that there could
be found about town scores of men
who have been, at some period of
their life, members of volunteer tire
companies, and who are undoubtedly
waiting for some one to make a move
in the matter. What is everybody's
business is no one's business, and who
is the man with' sufficient enterprise
to take the initiatory step?
Owing to the failure of ihe last
legislatui't to make the apportion
ment of the territory so as to conform
to the statute, Congress will now
have to ratify the election of last
Tuesday or else make the apportion
ment and order a new election. New
Mexican.
It appears to us that the wisest
course to be pursued would be to
leavu the settlement of the question
to Congress. This would certainly ho
the cheapest way to solve the prob
lem both as regards lime and money.
The vote of Ihe 2d iust. shows con
clusively that u large proportion of
the citizens of the territory cannot
ypare time to attend to even so im
portant a duty as expressing their
preference for those who are to make
our laws and administer them. In
Lincoln county, for instance, not half
the registei ed vote wa polled, and
we can si o no reason why this would
not be the caso if a new election were
ordered. Our judgment is to let well
enough alone.

talk is of a sensational character, it is

about him able and cautious advisors,
who will insure to the country ayood

confidence in the selection that Gen.

there may he men left out whom dif
ferent sections have made up their
minds should be elevated to cabinet
positions, yet, in the long run we feel
sure ail will have confidence in the se
lections that will be made. Tims far

tle to a position in the cabinet, and
that is Ciov. Foster of Ohio. It i not
unreasonable to suppose thatUoiikling
will be allowed to name the repre
sentative of his slate and in all likeli
hood the coming man is Thomas C.

the slate can only he guessed at at this

waste time in idle speculation.
