Vegas. The editors of several papers
have made themselves obnoxious by
making flings at our city and taking
some period of our history as a type
of the present, They seem to forget
that it is the duty of the pres of the
territory to wwrk in unison and to
show New Mexico at its best. Nothing
is to be gained by misrepresenting a
locality, and, next to inducing settlers
' to come into the town in which they
live, the best thing is to help along
immigration to the territory, no mat
ter to what locality. It will bo no
card for our people in general to have
such stories as the following given to
thr, luniKJ. for manv an one in the
east is not likely to hanker after a res
idencc in a country where the recrea
lion of t he people is faind in Ij nchiniis
and murders. Neither is it a good
advertisement for a community to
have it go forth that a lavoiite route
of travel is infested by robbers, espec
ially when there is no well grounded
í.roof that those who travel over

that route aro likely to meet
with cutthroats. Through the
medium of the press idouc can, we!
hope lo bring the advantages of our
te rrilor y before the people of the
stales, and if they believe that which
is of good repute, will they not natur
ally the more readily accept that which
hasau unsxivory odor. The editor of the
Sucorro Sua has dished up a lot of
HtufI about Las Vegas, which common
decency should have prompted him to
t row into the waste basket al
ter he amused himself by having
written it. The Sua in its last issue
delivers itselt of the following:
"The Las Vegas route to the White
Oaks U infested by a gang of robbers
strong enough to set the authorities
at defiance. Tliis is one attraction
for tourist that the Socorro route
lacks. If the papers are to ue believ
ed nearly the whole 1'ecos and White
Oaks eoimtry is full of robbers who
do not hesitate to murder and rob
any person going that way. The re
cent adventures of "Kid" and liuda
baugh who have not yet been captur
ed ves some show of probability to
their series.
Amoug the attractions oilered to
tourists by Las Vegas is the chance of
seeing some person killed, or witness
a hanging party on the plaza. Such
unique attractions :.re supposed lo be
specially suited to prepare Hie travel
er for the reception he is likely to re

route. If these are not enough to
'irraw visitors they will try to have

lantes had known that ihe Mjrht ol
the dead bodies would have made a
monomaniac of him, they would un
doubctidly, have been compassionate
enough lo luve taken them down. For
his sake we wish they had been

zens wrfuld have been spared the ear
ache by being obliged to listen to his
senseless twaddle. Alter boring ev
eryone that he could corral he has
now taken to rehashing this in the
columns of his paper.
Life and properly are as sale in Ve
gas to-day as in any large city, and
fuereis no argumen! in ail his gib
berish. "The Kid's" gang has not
operated anywhere along ihe route
from Vegas to While Oaks, and once
in that, nourishing camp a person is
safe whether he goes by the Socorro
or Vegas route. Conkl'm is like any
uili' r enthusiast, who has no real in
terest in Socorro, but would sell out
al,any time and emigrate to auother
town il he could find a purchaser for
his little office, so that he works with
the hireling spirit to make all ho can

sinarl. We do not blame the people
of Socorro for trying to secure the
trade of the Oaks, but wc doubt if
