Socorro, December "7. Dear Koogler: I wrote up in great haste last night, the particulars of the mur der of A. M. Qonkliu, editor of the Socorro Sun. The question is already being asked as to whether this murder was likely incited by auy religious differences? If I thought it was and should an swer the question at all, we fehould certainly sny so.But not believing that religious prejudice between the Prot estants and lionitkU Catholics had any thing at ail to do with it, we unhesi tatingly answer, no. The three young Mexican men, who arc believed to have committed the cowardly deed, wu are sorry to say, were members of the same church where the Christinas live extremes were held. I make t:.is statement, be cause it is not honorable in us or jut to allow a false impression to go out that would casi the blame where ii does not belong. Solar as we can see (rumors to the contrary notwith standing) the whole difficulty origin ated at. the church during the exercis es of the evening of the 24th. A young man, always polite and civil at church and Sunday schools, heretofore, had his fool upon a bench which partly obstruct ed the aisle. Mr. Conkliu, one of the ushers of the evening, asked him 10 take his foot down. The young man refused to do so and after asking him a few times Mr. C. put it down for him and passed on. On Mr. C's re turn he found the young man with his foot in the same position andord hirn aga n to keep his feet down. The young man could talk a little English, yet there is a bare possibility that he did not understand frilly what Mr. C. meant. From this apparently trivial ollunsi the youuy man bee. me very angry and he and a brother and I think a young uncle wert out, itivit iug Mr. (). with them. It. seems also from the testimony given before he jury of inquest that a pistol was ex hibited by one of the young men at or about the door as they went out. They seemed anxio .s to get Mr. C out with them, but of course he die. not accede to their wishes. A pocke, pistol was found at Mr. C's. side r near hint after he fell and had expin d which probably was the same one seen in the house and likely the one in the baud of the young man win first laid hold of Mr. 0. This a--counts for Mr. C's efforts to hold th youug man who first laid hands on him when he had pushed him back against the church wall. Or perhaps he was tryiug to take it from hint, and likely had just wrenched it iron: him when the nun from around the corner of the church lired the fata shot. I spoke last night of the immensi gathering at the funeral, of both Mexicans and Americans. This was owing partly to the fact of the great estcm the people of both na tionalities la;l (or Mr. Cas well as the universal indignation lelt. in the brutal murder of one of Socorro's best citizens. The people called a meeting yester day nioruiug and seleced a mania fur tito tmienil decision and selected pal b ar. rs c -tis".i ing of some of the best American and Mexican citizens ia'the place. Al appointed a com inittee of eiltt Americans and eight MxiciH t' invite the people to i in lu ne ral. Warrants have been issued for ih arret of the parties. Mrs. C. was al most overcome wit h the shock list is ben ring t1.:) under an almost crushing load with commendable fortitude, and by the advises of friends, will tor the lime b"ing continue the paper. Citizens of all nationalities have been busy to-day consulting as to the best means of arresting the guilty panies. T. II. DESMONTS, HOUSE AND SIGN PAINTER.
