of these supplements show that faith
ful work has been done tor mouths

large. Notable among the other very
creditable Xew Year's special uum-Im-i's
is that oí the Denver Tribune.
Tins enterprising journal has issued
a thirty-two page paper, four times
its usual size, brim full of matter of
great iuterest to all, especially those
who are looking towards Colorado a6
a place of residence. It is but another
proof that the Tribune is the best jour
nal west of the Missouri river. The

formerly secretary of the National
Republican Committee. He was for
many years secretary of the U. S. sen
ate. Kilbournc has beeu one of the
Washing" ou correspondents of the
New York T-ibune, and will bo re
membered by hh persistence: in refus
ing to teli from whence he derived in
telligence of the doings of certain con
gressional comnvUees arid was in jail
for contempt. Uoth are able journal

President Palmer, of the Denver
& Itio Graude It. It., presented Engin
eer Jacob L. Moycr with a check lor
$1,000 and a $550 time piece as a tes

Veta pass, Noy. 17.
A meeting of the Colorado Cattle
Growers' association was recently
held and a committee appointed to
draw up resolutions to stop maverick -ing,
to be presented at the next meet
ing to be held in Denver on the 11th
lust.
Oregon now enters the Held asa
rival of Pennsylvania in defrauding
insurance companies. In 1873, Jere
miah Elliott tofak out a policy for
$8,000 on his son, Moses', life, aged
18, A short time after, an uncle told
a sad story of the drowning of Mose
iu the Columbia river. The insur
ance company at first refused to pny,
but finally paid the full amount.
Mose was recently hunted up by
detectives and judgment gained
against his father and uncle for $13,
576. With the blood money they had
tocked a ranche in Jackson county,
Oregou, and had been ycry pros
perous. Live Oak county, Texas, stockmen
are about to wage war on a half
dozen stock thieves, the last of a largo
gang that in years past committed
great depredations.

New York, Jan. 4. The Tribune of
Monday printed over two pages ef a
tabular siatemeut of the mii.iug in
dustry iu the United States. Ii says:
"It will be seen from the statistics
that we present that the last year has
nut been favorable for speculative
mining oppositions; stocks have
as a rule, gone down and distrust
hh taken the place- of bu tyaut and
exaggerated confidence. At the same
time, the budines-, regarded as a pro
ductive iudui-try ha-t more than held
its own. The number of dividend
paying companies has nearly doubled.
The tot I yield of ore is remaikubly
steudy, and an exceedingly good per
centage has been earned on capital
actually invested iu land, machinery
and working expeues, while the in
dustry is constantly expanding, con
quering almost every mouth, and New
fields are drawing additional forces
iu the wav of capital and men.
