Friday, September 2G, 1879, Unfortunate Memphis is confronted witli the danger of losing her rotton trade south the regulation of the State Hoard of Health which forbids the introduction of cotton into that city while the y:llow fere J pidenie continues. The Hoard has i t modify this proliil ition, belicy.'ng that the ginning would be a mean i of spreading the infection wherever the cotton should be subsequently shipped. Heretofore persons living in Memphis have not been permitted to so into the cotton-fields and assist in picking the crop, although labor of this kind was in strong demand at re muueratire wages, and there arc a large number of able-bodied people being supported by charity in absolute idleness inthecitv. The State Board lias modified this regulation, however aud it is allowable for persons to go outside the city for work after thev have passed ten days in the rural camps. General Sherman has written a let tor declining to attend a reunion of Confederate and Federal soldiers at Salisbury, N. C. He says: "There were a very few Union soldiers in North Carolina during the "War (though we believe the people generally were op posed to secession and war), so that your meetings which is confined to the surviving soldiers of North Caro lina, will be; in fact, a Confederate reunion, where I would be certainly be out of place. All soldiers in their social reunions glorify their deeds of heroism, and this reunion will hardly be an exception, and it would be a strange sight for Gen. Sherman to cheer the victories of his enemies and respond to the claim that because the soldiers of North Carolina were brave and true to their State and section, their cause was sacred as ours, which finally triumphed aud made our Un ion more glorious and more resplen dent than before." Friends are discovered rafher than made. There are people who are in their own nature friends, only they don't know each other; but certain things, like poetry, music and paint ings, arc like the freemason's sign they reveal the initiated to each other. Mrs II. I3eecher Stowc. "The accomplished and suave M. Capel who was sent to England to win the higher classes to the Papacy, cannot pay his debts and is bankrupt His theological school, once supposed to be full of promise, and feared some what by Christian people, after a la vish expenditure of money, has turn ed out an utter failure. The intimate friendship between M. Capel aud the wealthy Marquis of Bute has ended in a quarrel and alienation, and rumor eveu said that his lor Jsnip wasincini 'iid to turn his back upon the hicrachy. M. Capel has been recalled to Italy." Eastern Paper. THE VERY BEST LINE TO THE EAST. KANSAS PACIFIC RAILT SOLID ADVANTAGES t SHORT.
