A FETIIIFIED EEL,.
Hiram II. Clark, while plorin; one
of his fields at Short Beach, Bran ford,
some time since, found a petrified eel.
It was two feet four inches lonif and
averaged about seven inches in cir
cumference, lie first supposed it was
an Indian relic, many arrow-head
and stone petles having been found
upon his farm. But the substance
liad a ring to it and was of a poroiu
tinture, which 6howed that it was pe
trification. Thohfiadofnn eel was
plainly defined, the eyes beiug pro
minent. The lot ou which the curio
sily was found wa covered with
watr at all seasons of the vcar at the
time that Mr. Clark went ón to the
farm. He drained it.
The shrinking of the water in Tu
lare lake has uncovered a pre-historie
settlement. Stone building, traces of
canals once bordered with planted
trees, and other evidences of former
wvupntiou by nn unknown race, nro
being clearjy defined, (is tho water
subsides.
